Title: Not English But Angels
Author: Sideris
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson; Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade
Length: 203,251 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Dubious consent, show-typical violence
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: A sort-of canon, sort-of AU fic in which I twist and supplement canon to weave it into a new story in which Sherlock and John come from different worlds and nothing is quite what it seems.

There were times I didn't even think you were human. - John

I may be on the side of the angels, but don’t think for one second that I am one of them. - Sherlock

Reccer's comments:

Where to even begin with this one?

This fandom is rich in stories where Sherlock makes his slow transition from Great Man to Good One, and this is one of my favorites. Somehow it never seemed to quite find its audience—it's currently sitting at fewer than 175 kudos on AO3.

The author takes what might seem an outlandish premise—Sherlock and Mycroft are Angels, sent down to Earth on an investigative mission from Heaven—and manage to make it work perfectly within the bounds of existing canon material. The story here happens between the lines, filling in gaps, taking events that we've seen on screen (and read about on John's blog) and shifting our perspective on them.

The Sherlock we meet at the start of this story is cold, detached, manipulative, self-serving and so utterly far from human it's difficult to imagine he'll ever get there. He's not exactly popular with Management, something that Mycroft (ever-ambitious and yet fiercely protective) anxiously seeks to smooth over. Sherlock wants a human specimen he can study up close, and John, his new flatmate, seems to suit those purposes perfectly. From there, as he and John grow closer, we witness Sherlock's defenses crumble and fall away as he finds himself entirely blindsided by unexpected affection and moved to act in increasingly irrational ways to ensure that John remains safe. The slow progression of their relationship is poignant and touching and frustrating and incredibly satisfying all at once.

There's a case which cleverly incorporates elements from BBC canon—Sherlock finds himself caught up in Moriarty's web while investigating the deaths of several Nephilim, while Mycroft begins to realize he's being used as a pawn in a conspiracy of biblical proportions. This all comes to a head with a twist that made my jaw drop (and which sent me rushing back to the beginning to pay attention to all of the clues that I'd missed the first time through.)

As with any fic that adheres to a canon timeline, it can be hard to avoid the sense that you know what's coming next (because… we've already seen it.) But the author manages to put a fresh spin on even dialogue we already know by heart, a feat which feels remarkable.

Note: there is a moment of extremely dubious consent in this story involving John's missing Wednesday. The fic itself is not tagged as such, but the chapter in question (Chapter 11) is clearly marked at the beginning. Highlight for details if you'd like to know the gist of what happens before deciding whether or not to read: Sherlock, fearing he may have revealed his secret, drugs John in order to question him. The drugged conversation takes a turn, and John masturbates while Sherlock watches. Sherlock does not touch John. John does not remember the incident in question and is not told what happened.

This fic is Sherlock's journey from Superior Being to Human Being, and it's a wild, weird and wonderful ride.

Reccer's comments:
This AU examines Sherlock's troubled relationship with his "transport" and with self-acceptance by having him grapple with the effects of sexual trauma and progressive physical disability. (To clarify, those two life events have entirely independent origins. Sherlock deals with both, but they had nothing to do with each other at the outset.) Although the fic has the "Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings" tag, the author provides notes and content warnings at the chapter level. It's a roller coaster ride of angst to be sure, but there's wisdom, warmth, and humor throughout. And a happy ending. I actually thought I'd found it via rec here, and I was surprised to discover I was mistaken.

Reccer's comments: This is a wonderful Halloween anthology made up of five short stories, each with very different tones and pairings. Both of the Johnlock vignettes start out scary but wind up sweet, and the wonderful descriptions have a stylistic hint of Bradbury's October Country about them. The Mystrade story of a frustrated genie and his reluctant master is out-and-out charming; the others are more haunting and tragic. A vividly imagined and strikingly written collection of treats that will sweep you away this witching hour! :)

Author's summary: Appearances deceive. That is, one might say, their chief function.

Reccer's comments: I have fallen woefully behind in recc'ing the many wonderful fics in this month's ACD Holmesfest, so at this point I will plan to leave thumbnail recs for most of my favorites in this comm's open recs post. But I couldn't finish out my month as a recc'er here without giving a bit more in-depth attention to this remarkable story.

Amid deep historicity and attention to period detail, this fic reconnects us with Kitty Winters and Violet de Merville as the entrepreneurs of a uniquely Victorian business venture. Although they were antagonists in The Illustrious Client, they have now joined forces to make their own way in the world. However, their business has become the target of a strange and disturbing series of attacks, and Holmes and Watson's investigation raises questions that skirt close to some of their own long-hidden secrets and desires.

With a strong case fic as its backbone, this story gives us pining of the very finest vintage. Holmes's delicate yearning throughout the ins and outs of his work and his daily life is beautifully expressed. The language is confident and balances lyricism and metaphor with great doses of humor and practicality. An engrossing and moving treat for the heart as well as the head, with a sublime and romantic ending.

Sample this masterful writing -- I think you will be glad that you did!

It touches the heart with its seamless flow from present day to Victorian times (TAB). Our vidder's music selection--Mendelssohn’s Lieder Ohne Worte No. 7--makes this fanvid extra special since it's the classic violin piece Holmes loves to play for Watson in ACD canon. Pairing: Holmes/Watson
Length: 2,100 words
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: none
Verse: ACD Books
Author's summary: Watson struggles to uncover a mystery in a seaside village. Holmes is less than helpful.

Reccer's comments: The ACD Holmesfest is underway with so many delightful entries already and more to come! While this comm has an open recs post for the fest, it's also nice to have some more detailed recs. So let me start by calling your attention to this unique and lovely piece.

Here is a glimpse of Holmes and Watson, on the cusp of retirement, making their way through what Watson considers a lack-luster investigation amid the chilly ambience of a seaside resort town well past its summer prime. The author creates the details of the scene - the emptying streets, the dusty police station, the cramped local pub, the dark cliffside path - with an excellent eye for the most telling details.

The real marvel, though, is the keen and convincing take this story offers on Holmes and Watson's relationship, obviously established for many long years and deeply imbued with both affection and irritation. It is comfortable and prickly, teasing and sharp, boring on one level while obviously content and loving in its fundamentals. Here are two men who have made a life together for so long that they get on each other's nerves precisely because they know each other so well and are so completely synchronous in their routines.

Heart-warming with a tinge of melancholy, this fic left me feeling as if I had gotten a realistic and affectionate glimpse at this couple who, even ensconced in the mild aggravations of daily life, clearly can't live without each other.

Author's summary:After John's life falls apart, he returns to Baker Street for good. Sherlock has questions. They find the answers together.

Reccer's comments: I love [personal profile] yaycoffee's gentle and perceptive writing style. She has such a nice way with words. Her portrayal of John and Sherlock always feel authentic. I would seriously recommend any of her stories, but I've decided to highlight her latest fic since it's post S4, and I personally feel we need more of those.

In this particular story, we are privy to Sherlock's warm and tentative inner thoughts regarding John's return to 221B after the events of TFP. He has questions but can't put them into words. We see the friends reunite and finally become a romantic couple. The progression is sweet and evocative. It is also clever as John--through their increasing intimacy--answers Sherlock's unspoken questions out loud. So well done.

Enjoy!

Verse: ACD Holmes
Author's summary: Sherlock Holmes is a contradiction, an enigma, a force; at once the most generous spirit and the most self-contained man I have ever known. I've known more of him, I think, than anyone on earth. Yet for years I'd learned nothing about his boyhood, nor his fears, nor his future hopes, nor his father’s name. I never felt it as a lack until I knew he loved me.

Reccer's comments: Hello, everyone! I'm so happy to be a recc'er here with so many great new fanworks to look forward to this month as part of both the inktober art challenge and the ACD Holmesfest exchange! It's going to be an amazing October :) I want to start my recs, though, with this gorgeous new story from a_candle_for_sherlock, whose ACD fics consistently amaze me with their beauty, elegance, complexity, and tenderness.

This fic introduces us to the third Holmes brother in an unexpected way and delves into the painful family history surrounding the brothers' estrangement. The story crafts a subtle, loving portrait of Watson and Holmes's relationship as Watson begins to understand more about Holmes's formative experiences and his struggle to reconcile himself to his own identity.

The story is compassionate toward all its characters; I particularly love the quietly courageous and loyal role that Mycroft plays. Watson's narrative voice is utterly convincing in its delicate inquisitiveness, patience, and honest devotion. The fic portrays the painful fracturing of a family, but its central themes are those of healing, recovery, self-acceptance and the deepening of intimate connections. It also offers interesting glimpses into some of the historical realities of gay life in Victorian London.

This is a lovely, gentle story of both romance and brotherhood. I highly recommend it.

Length: 13,000 words

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: MH: Please remove me from this thread.

Reccer's comments: This is such a delightful, funny little fic. I adore texting fics in general, and this one had me laughing out loud on several occasions. Most of the chapters are fairly short, and the whole thing is a quick read. If you want a break from angst and drama, either in fic or in real life, then curl up with a nice cup of tea (or glass of wine) and settle in to be entertained.

It takes place post-Series 4. The whole thing starts when Sherlock Holmes starts a grouptext, asking who took his skull. Mycroft repeatedly asks to be removed from the thread, to no avail (hence, the summary). Different topics come up, participants keep changing the name of the grouptext, borderline crack ensues - and eventual johnlock is revealed. Have fun!

Title: Restoration
Author: Chryse
Pairing: Sherlock/John, Sherlock/OMCs
Length: 50,000 words
Rating: Explicit
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: “It won’t ever be the same as it was.”
“Of course it won’t be the same. But it might be even better.”

Reccer's comments: This is a fantastic Series 4 fix-it. Anyone who is familiar with Chryse knows to expect quality storytelling and emotional resonance. This is no exception.

The story picks up right after the events of Sherrinford, but before the ending montage. Sherlock, of course, has just lost his home and has learned that his childhood memories are false. On top of struggling to deal with all of his recent (and decades-long) losses, Sherlock also finds himself adrift and unmoored from his sense of self. He no longer knows what is true or false, or what he can trust to be real. So he embarks on a journey of self-discovery. After going through painful therapy to recover lost memories, he then begins the process of letting go of the past and finding a way forward. And he does this by going on a global walkabout.

He doesn't stay away for long, but he makes good use of his time. Discovering who he is, what he likes, and what he wants, including an awareness and exploration of his nascent sexuality. A delightful OC is introduced who helps him on this quest, and who asks for help of a different nature in return.

And never fear. John is a stalwart and supportive presence throughout. He isn't always physically present (he doesn't accompany Sherlock on his walkabout), but he's always on the edge of Sherlock's awareness, and ours. This is the John that comes through for Sherlock in the end, because he never really left. So be aware that, even though the pairing tag includes Sherlock with several OC's, it's only in the service of letting Sherlock find his way - and that way is back to John.

Reccer's comments: Written before Series 4, this story is in turns heartbreaking, painful, cathartic - and, above all else - joyful and full of hope. Told mostly from John's POV, it begins with both Mary and the baby gone. John finally finds the courage to tell Sherlock what he really wants, only to have Sherlock send him away because he can't trust that he isn't John's consolation prize. And so begins a painful journey for both men, separated by both distance and time, as they struggle to accept the fact that neither one is going to have what he truly wants. And it's not until that reality is finally accepted, that both men can fall back together again. Painful, but worth the payoff in the end.

Author's summary: Memories return. Old secrets are unearthed. Seven years of hidden love ignite. Who is behind the mind control, and how far back does it reach into Sherlock's past?

This multi-chapter patchwork fixit fic diverts from the path at season three and turns season 4 into a collage. This was the Johnlock I wanted. May it be healing for you, too.

Reccer's comments: This is marvelous storytelling, with twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It re-imagines Season 3 in a whole new light, and therefore Season 4 -- well. I don't want to give away too much. But the tale involves memory loss, secret organizations, and a backstory that includes Sherrinford as the third Holmes sibling (and what a delightful, if flawed, character he is.) Mary is a marvelous villain here, done in a way that I wish the show would have done. There are flashbacks to Sherlock's teenage years, where *everything* begins, and connects neatly with all the events in canon up to, and partially inclusive of, Series 3.

And of course, at the heart of it all is the love between Sherlock and John.

Title: Piecroft Chronicles (Locked to AO3 users)
Author: iwantthatcoat
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Sherlock Holmes/Sherlock Holmes
Length: A Practical Affair, 19,114 words; Flowers and a Fruitbasket, 5,339 words.
Rating: Explicit
Verse: Sherlock BBC

A Practical Affair (aka Piecroft Won’t Let Me Bring the Lottery Tickets: A Tale of Self-Love)
Author's summary: Sherlock has the same ridiculously high standards for himself in his new sex life with John as he does elsewhere in his personal and professional life. He lacks experience, and though he knows John won't care one bit, Sherlock still does. Fortunately, there is someone who understands exactly what he needs to do and why...and he won't even have to explain himself. Which is a good thing, because Mycroft won't let him. It would break timetravel regulations, after all. A Timetravel Selfcest Fic.

Reccer's comments: This story’s premise could have been just a simple ground for hot PWP (Sherlock is insecure about his lack of sexual experience now that he’s got together with John, so he goes back in time to meet his younger self and get sexual experience with his preself) and that would have been more than fine. But the author digs in to really explore the feelings and ethical challenges, and it turns into a deeply emotional story about memory, lack of memory, self-love, self-knowledge, and hard choices.

Bratty, desperate, lonely, honest university-age preself!Sherlock is so compelling here, as an amoral moral center. The interrogation he does of the older Sherlock is absolutely gripping. The prolonged sexual explorations between older Sherlock and his younger self are intensely erotic, made all the more so by their sharp, clear-eyed analytical edge - and by the unexpected emotional vulnerability both versions find themselves feeling. The relationship between the Sherlocks takes full control of the story, and it’s an amazingly skillful dance of arousal and gut-punch.

Flowers and a Fruitbasket

Author's Summary: From A Practical Affair: "If it were the following year, I just might have deleted this information, but for now, you can thank the good folk at the College of Medicine for not noticing the non-medical student sitting in on their Thursday morning lectures on body systems."

"God yes, thank you," he stammered. "I'll send them flowers."

Sherlock, true to his word, has sent the Department Chair some flowers upon his return to the present-- a reward for allowing his past self to have audited some very helpful anatomy lessons. Imagine his surprise to see an email from his preself requesting he head back in time yet again, and to bring that doctor he wasn't allowed to so much as hint at the existance of with him. (What beats timetravel selfcest? A timetravel selfcest threesome! Coming soon in the third instalment of the Piecroft Chronicles ) But first things first... what does he tell John? Part Two of the trilogy.

Reccer's comments: The extremely hot and satisfying second tale brings John and Sherlock together at last. Bit-not-good Sherlock hadn’t been planning to tell John what he’s done - but telling a selectively edited and artfully embellished version of the truth turns out to be better than letting John think Sherlock had practiced on someone else. It’s hot, it’s complex, and it’s a little bit bittersweet as these two awkward, damaged men still fall short of perfect bliss - it’s good to see John being able to see through Sherlock’s deflections, in a loving way. Did I mention it’s hot?

Title: To His Watson Going to Bed
Author: Okapi
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 2042
Rating: NC-17/Explicit
Verse: ACD books
Author's summary: Holmes recites poetry while Watson undresses. PWP. Poetry + prose.

Reccer's comments:

This is a multilayered PWP that unfolds like a complicated puzzle-box with nesting dolls inside, both in form and meaning.

There is a poem within the text, modeled on John Donne’s unbelievably steamy To His Mistress Going to Bed. The text of the story itself is a sextuple 221B-drabble (221 words, last one must begin with B). There are puns and plays on words and canon references and nods to the author’s other stories (not necessary to have read those).

And for all its cleverness, it never feels forced and the seams don’t show. The relationship between Holmes and Watson - the affection, the prickliness, the banter, the desire between them that has a three-dimensional lived-in quality, their lustful, appreciative ways with each others’ bodies and minds, is beautifully drawn.

And the poem itself. The lushness and lustiness of it is both elegant and filthy and it recalls Donne beautifully - like a glimpse of reddened ready genitals between parted silk. Holmes’s recitation building to its climax literally left me breathless; I could hear its rhythm so clearly.

If you have the slightest hint of a logophilia kink, do not pass up this one.

Excerpt: I coughed.
Holmes looked up.
I raised an eyebrow as if to ask, ‘Is there more?’
He shot me a hard look that said, ‘I’d be as dull as most of the criminal class of London if there wasn’t!’
And thank goodness, it was Holmes doing the reciting for once the poetry resumed, I was far too gone to do anything but leak and tremble, grip the furnishings and forget to breathe.

You and me both, Watson. Chapter one is the story with the poem integrated, chapter 2 is the poem left alone to stand up by itself.

Author Summary: Mycroft, by the way, advised me not to tell you anything of this affair beyond the bare minimum. He seems to think you'll react badly, and I can't help but grant that he is probably correct... But you're family now, John. It's time you learned exactly what that means.

Content Warning: Infidelity, Incest (off-stage, between consenting adult siblings. Not involving Rosie!)

Reccer's comments: Eurus Holmes is a divisive character for sure - but she presents a lot of great opportunities for fic writers. And as soon as we saw Musgrave Hall in all its Gothic glory, stories that play on Gothic literature tropes started to seem natural - even in the supernatural or unnatural.

(This story also fills in some major gaps in various characters' motivations from the series, IMO.)

This is an epistolary fic, Sherlock writing a letter to his partner John, letting him in on all the family secrets - as so often in Gothic lit, that family secret happens to be a history of incest: consensual incest between adult siblings, often with the intention of producing a super-super genius instead of just a regular run-of-the-mill genius. Eurus is the product of such a union.

The letter proceeds with such straightforward, elegantly written logic and subtle appeals to emotion that the slowly dawning horrific conclusion the reader is coming to about Sherlock’s special project almost seems perfectly fine. Sherlock’s matter-of-fact emotional honesty is touching and kept me so riveted I welcomed the slow derailment of reason.

And the denouement reminded me of a certain pivotal, shattering line of dialogue from the climax of Watchmen.

Title: Curse of the Were-Tuna
Author: WhoGroovesOn
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 46,916
Rating: Explicit
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John couldn’t help but feel as though the large tuna beyond the glass was staring at him, which was weird because it’s not like fish had eyelids, they always seemed to be staring at things.

Reccer's comments: The author says this isn't crack, but I think it's a shining gem of the crackfic genre - a premise that seems ridiculous on the surface treated with absolute commitment, until it becomes vivid and real. Take the plunge into this splashy tale of piscine lycanthropy and you'll never see a fishtank quite the same way again.

When wounded army vet John Watson applies for a job as an aquarium security guard, he has no idea what’s about to happen after dark.

This underrated author has a spectacular sense of worldbuilding, and this fic is suspenseful, sexy, vivid, hilarious and surprisingly touching. The plot twists come fast and furious, and I especially love this very inventive version of Moriarty and Moran (who are both female in this story). Fishnappings! Sushi-related threats! Weird and eldritch magic!

Also, it’s set in the London Aquarium and was written long before any pivotal scenes occurred there on the show.

Excerpt: Mycroft was the one who became the killjoy for the tuna pair. A few days after the discovery of their morse code capabilities Mycroft appeared at the window of their tank. Dressed formally as usual, umbrella and all, he sat down facing the glass and proceeded to unfold the paper under his arm.

After floating by a few times trying to read the news, Sherlock darted to John, fin flicking a short message, S - T - O - P / C - O - D - E.

The urgent message made John want to see what Sherlock had read on the paper and managed to catch Mycroft before he folded it away. There on the offered page was a small article questioning “Are Sea Life’s Fish Intelligent?” Below was a little black and white picture of their tank and, sure enough, the black shapes of John and Sherlock within. The paper itself was one of those silly “Are aliens cavorting amongst my sheep?!” types, but still, the fact that someone had written in to say they’d seen the fish at the aquarium doing code and talking to each other in an intelligent manner was unsettling. And who knew who else would see it and start watching a little closer.
