Date: 2017-10-29 06:21 pm (UTC)Title: Rewriting History
Author: currently anonymous (will be revealed on Oct. 31st)
Pairing: Holmes/Watson
Length: 10,000 words
Rating: PG
Summary: A correspondence between Holmes and Watson in the immediate aftermath of the Great War in which they discuss questions of history both public and personal.
Reccer's comments: This beautiful, elegant, understated, deft, brilliant fic… It’s utterly in character and in period tone, it’s complex and layered, it has so very much heart. It all takes place via correspondence at the very end of WWI, as an exchange of letters allows Holmes and Watson to gradually reveal the truth behind some past hurts and misunderstandings between them, opening the way for something far better to emerge. At 10,000 words, it’s long on the scale of offerings in this fest, and I opened it late at night, thinking I would just read the first bit and shelve the rest for later…but instead I read the whole thing in one great, heady gasp of wonder and emotion, because not a single one of those 10,000 words is out of place. I can’t recommend this enough.
…And that’s not to say there aren’t so many other excellent fics in this fest! Just for example: Impersonation, in which Holmes meets William Gillette(!!). Upon a Ring, which beautifully honors both a current and a past relationship. Autumn in Wimpole, a gentle and quietly sweet glimpse of long-established Holmes/Watson. A Mother's Adventure and The Adventure of the Maidservant's Revenge, which both allow minor characters from canon to come wonderfully to the fore. The Adventure of the Devil's Snare, an excellent fix-it of "The Five Orange Pips." And so many more!

Date: 2017-11-07 12:03 am (UTC)The author of "Rewriting History" was actually rachelindeed (methylviolet10b was the recipient). I meant to come back and add that in after reveals, but didn't get to it – I'm sorry! Since I'm guessing I won't be able to go back and edit my original comment now, I'll list the authors here of all the fics I recced above:
Rewriting History by rachelindeed
Impersonation by garonne
Upon a Ring by sanguinity
Autumn in Wimpole by sanspatronymic
A Mother's Adventure by scfrankles
The Adventure of the Maidservant's Revenge by tripleransom
The Adventure of the Devil's Snare by methylviolet10b
