Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: He has been on the road for two years, and he is exhausted. He’s almost accepted that he will never see London (John) again—almost. But then there are nights like tonight, where he is weak, and all he can think of is the warmth of the flat they once shared, the crackle of the fire in the hearth, the teasing smile playing at the corner of John’s lips, the boxes of half-eaten Chinese takeaway balanced precariously in their laps. He aches at the memory of it, at the realisation that it is something he may never experience again.

Reccer's comments: Of all the cliffhangers the show has given us, I think the one at the end of series 2 is the most powerful for fans. There's something about the potential for anything to happen during the time Sherlock is away, both to him and to those left behind, and for an emotion-laden reunion when the Prodigal returns. This fic does a spectacular job of both, taking us into the minds, hearts, and bodies of both Sherlock and John as we see what a toll those two years took, and how they slowly manage to help each other to heal. (All episodes after Many Happy Returns are ignored.) This fic is truly a gem of its genre, filled with self-flagellating pining and aching regrets. The quiet rightness of them being together that neither can deny. The delicious, heady delicacy of the realizations and declarations and finally the swoon-inducing beauty of their eventual, inevitable consummation. Although there are some very angsty bits, the entire fic buoyed me up on a cloud of endorphins and just made me feel so serene and peaceful and comforted.

Their camera may catch more than they're looking for, however, when it comes to a certain paramedic named John Watson. . .

Reccer's comments:  What an incredibly inventive and gripping story! This is a complete AU in which Sherlock, John, and Greg are members of a Swiss mountain rescue team. Told in the format of a documentary with an extremely skillful film editor, the focus is nominally on the rescues and life on the mountain, but more tellingly digs into the private lives of the team members. The documentary format is pure genius with juxtaposed scenes, quick-paced montages and theatrical cuts that create fantastic tension and drama while preserving the mystery and building up an emotional reveal that literally had me grinning with tears of joy.

The rating is for language and possibly some depictions of injuries, no sex.

Author's summary: None provided by author, but this follows John and Sherlock post-series 4 as they expand their relationship to include BDSM practices.

Reccer's comments: On the surface, this looks like lots of filthy smut. And it is. But it's also so much more than that. The installments range from pure PWP to hurt/comfort, fluff, and casefics. Throughout, John and Sherlock deepen and reinforce their emotional connection through an exploration of a variety of kinks. They also work through issues from both their individual pasts and the trauma they've been through together. With very smart, sophisticated writing and consistently high emotional payoffs, this series definitely delivered far more than I expected.

The author is still adding to the series, but each installment can be read as a standalone.

Title: The Men Who Talked Between the Words
Author: Odamaki
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade, brief John Watson/Mary Morstan, Harry Watson/OFC, James Sholto/OMC, Billy Wiggins/OFC
Length: @460,000 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: past abuse (including implied/referenced child abuse), implied/referenced suicide (not of any character from the TV show), implied/referenced drug use
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John expected to be a father some day; he expected to have the house, and the wife and the nice suburban job. Sherlock never expected to have children, in part because he never expected to make it past 30. As it turns out, you don't get a choice. Crammed into Baker Street with a baby, John struggles with single-parenthood and his own fears, while Sherlock treads the fine line between doing too little and saying too much.

Reccer's comments: It's hard to think of what I can say about this fic that hasn't already been said. Four years in the making, of a length comparable to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this story took extraordinary commitment to create and the end result is simply astonishing. I've been reading Holmesian fiction for quite a long time, and I've never run across another story that felt quite like this one. There's something so authentic and keenly observed about the details. There's a realism here that reaches out and never lets me go. The characters - both the main and the secondary ones - have such distinct voices, and their lives and relationships are deeply grounded and believable.

This is a realistic parentlock fic, and it's the deliciously slowest of slow-burn romances, and that heart of the story is beautiful. But that's really not all there is to it. Odamaki doesn't allow Sherlock, John, and the baby to live in a bubble. The story is full to bursting with the many other people who know them, who affect and are affected by them. Both Sherlock and John have important inward work to do before either is ready to think about romance. It's a story about growth, about healing, about hard-fought and hard-won maturity. About friendships and familiar places that won't stay neatly unchanged, and about painful habits and histories that won't fade away without long and deliberate effort.

When I think of this fic, the love story and the family Sherlock and John make together stands at the center. But I also think of Sherlock and Molly's quiet happiness working on her research together at Barts; James Sholto walking John through his fledgling orchard; Billy playing chess in hospital; Harry lounging with her girlfriend on the couch; Greg's tiepin; the moms in John's playgroup; the voice at the other end of a helpline.

This is a compelling fic about love and family, but it's also about all those other nooks and crannies of life that too often get left out of love stories. There's a village of vivid people wrapped up in this story, and I love them all.

(Also, I should add: 1) the story is complete. It ends at chapter 27. There are still new chapters going up, but they are 'bonus material' like deleted scenes and FAQ responses from the author. 2) The story goes AU after series 3, and incorporates no elements of series 4. The baby is a girl, but she is not the canonical 'Rosie' of the TV show).

Length: @2,000 words
Rating: Teen
Warnings: discussion of past child abuse (physical abuse from a parent)
Verse: ACD Holmes
Author's summary: Watson learns something disconcerting about Holmes's past.

Reccer's comments: There's something about this story that has stuck with me for years. I'm not sure I can precisely articulate it, but it has something to do with its deliberate combination of intimacy and distance. The vignette takes place in the first blush of Holmes and Watson's new relationship - they are in bed together, joyous and lazily post-coital, learning the idiosyncratic details of each other's bodies. In the midst of this warmth, Watson observes a small scar on Holmes's neck, and Holmes tells him the truth about it.

Holmes suffered abuse as a child, about which he maintains ambiguous memories and feelings. And the story quietly and beautifully observes the complex reactions both Holmes and Watson have to sharing this knowledge. Something rings true to me about the double consciousness they both seem to feel. Holmes is at once vulnerable and guarded, drawing nearer to Watson but needing also to step back. Watson, for his part, is conscious of the thrill of a biographer presented with new insight into his subject, even as the lover in him reacts with profound emotion.

The author captures a deeply loving moment in the evolution of their relationship, which is not at all a simple moment.

Reccer's Comments: *deep breath* So, this is a BBC John Watson character study through all four seasons but with emphasis, I would say, on the later seasons. It offers a careful, insightful, and emotional exploration of the John Watson that angered many fans both of the BBC show and of the original Doyle stories, myself included: the angry and sometimes violent man who is, in important ways, 'not okay' and who knows that about himself. The vid touches on a host of issues - trauma, PTSD, alcohol dependency, trust and anger issues, violence, loss, addiction to danger. The vid highlights many of John's worst moments - both as a person suffering and as a man lashing out - but it also remembers his strength, his desire to heal and protect, and the hellish experiences he has been through that have shaped his emotional landscape. This tribute refuses to minimize his flaws, but nonetheless approaches his character arc with respect and empathy.

As in many well-edited vids, I was struck by a number of the vidder's visual storytelling choices. With a keen eye for parallels and a confident touch in the layering of song lyrics, dialogue, and imagery, it's a powerful work. Sometimes I find that fanvids, by condensing a narrative and developing tone, mood, and emotion with greater immediacy than a fully mounted episode, can succeed in making certain characterization or story choices work better than they do in the source material. For me, this vid does that for John.

Length: 7,000 words

Warnings: none
Verse: ACD Books
Author's summary: John Watson tries to make sense of words and desire. Sometimes, he finds, that’s not such a simple task.

Reccer's comments: This is an exceptionally beautiful and tender love story. At times it has an almost dreamlike tone, perhaps aided by its non-linear structure as Watson drifts in and out of different precious and private memories. At moments it is imaginatively and delicately sensual, at other times it's bickering and delightfully funny - the rhyming dictionary! - and at still other times it can be shyly romantic or quietly sad. It offers up a gentle kaleidoscope of emotion and character insight as we trace the shift from friendship to romance, and the way that shift must bridge the painful gap of Reichenbach.

The dialogue is often elegantly simple and understated. The settings are vivid, etched in period detail but never cluttered. The portrait of love at the story's heart feels genuine - at times courtly, at times frustrated, at times peaceful - and on a meta level the fic deliberately plays with words. It's a gently and pleasantly ironic twist that, even as Watson comes to see the value in leaving the most private parts of their shared life unwritten, the fic itself writes these very moments with grace and power.

It's a lovely story that I hope will move you as it did me.

Title: Maintenance and Repair
Author: patternofdefiance
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson; brief John Watson/OFC
Length: 106,000 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: graphic depictions of violence/gore; amputation; body dysphoria; ableism
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John wants to explain the rush of sensation and data, which is just another form of sensation (or is it the other way around?). John wants to say: Augmentation circuits report temperature, pressure, various forms of quantitative input. Sudden changes are reported as pain, since sudden changes are dangerous, and pain is the quickest way to encourage reflexive extraction. But all John can manage is, “Nng.” Because this sudden touch is not reporting as pain.

Reccer's comments: This wonderful fic was five years in the making, and I'm so excited to be able to share it here on this comm now that it is finally finished! Patternofdefiance is a terrific writer, and this story is full of rich characterization, internal struggle, complex emotional and interpersonal dynamics, utterly convincing world-building, and well-realized original characters. This is a science-fiction, dystopic AU, but it's set in the very near future and the social, political, and psychological elements are convincing because they're only a few degrees removed from those of the world today. In this slightly more technologically advanced future, it's become possible to repair previously incurable injuries by grafting sensitive but short-term technology into the bodies and brains of the wounded. These disabled persons, who appear close to cyborgs, then have to deal with the ableism of a society that regards them uneasily and a medical profession that considers them violently unstable. Most of the care they receive is limited to 'maintenance and repair,' with the goal of preparing them for death once their augmentations fail - usually within two years - and ensuring they take no one else with them in their slow descent.

John enters the story as one of these disabled veterans, struggling in the aftermath of invasive procedures that were undertaken without his consent and which have transformed his body and his life in ways he finds hard to accept. It is in this state that he meets Sherlock and becomes his flatmate, friend, and colleague. Gradually they are both drawn into a series of mysteries surrounding other 'augmented' people, and they begin to realize that the information about John's condition peddled by the medical and political establishments may not be trustworthy.

This story has it all: insightful social commentary, an intelligent cast of characters -- John's ex, Mona, is one of the best OFCs I've encountered in the fandom -- and a slow-burn romance between Sherlock and John that, though fraught with miscommunication, manages to be both passionate and analytical, and above all superlatively in character.

Reccer's comments: I love this fic with a great love. Lines and scenes from it stick with me. I am an absolute sucker for good WWI and post-WWI Holmesian fic, and this has what I want from such fic: emotional intensity and plausible, thoughtfully-evoked historical context. The realities of war on the home front are well-handled -- be reminded that this was the first war when Londoners knew they could be bombed -- and the prose is delightfully paced and voiced. It's all so good. Be prepared to have a lot of feelings about Mycroft and the Holmes brothers' relationship.

Author's summary: My dear Mr. Smith,

Per our conversation of the 10th regarding the ms's unusual length, I am writing to propose that you delete the following text from Part One of "The Adventure of the Naval Treaty" before printing. I am sure that whatever expense you are put to for the new typesetting will ultimately be made up by a savings in the cost of printing. It has no bearing on the story, and was included purely because my readers seem to take an interest in these mundane sitting-room conversations between us. I intend to make similar cuts to Part Two before delivering on the deadline as we agreed. I believe no actual editing will be required. You can merely delete everything between ' "It does not tell us very much does it?" he remarked, as he handed it back to me' and ' "Hardly anything." ' However, that there may be no confusion, I replicate in the enclosure the exact portion of the text that I wish to suppress.

Thank you for your patience. I may say that apart from the length, there are many considerations which have induced me to make this change, and I very much appreciate your accommodating my wishes.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. John Watson.

Reccer's comments: This is part of an ongoing (and rather wonderful) series, but stands as a self-contained work. NAVA has always been one of my favorite canon stories, and I have been delighted to find great fic written about and around it. This fic elaborates on the relationship between Watson and "Tadpole" Phelps, through a conversation in the sitting room at 221b.

Reccer's comments: This is a fic that may need no introduction; I still don't have a very good sense of what counts as well-known in this vast and sprawling fandom. But it is a fic that opened new vistas for me, and a fic that feels mysteriously perfect, well-balanced and well-paced. Its Watson is a delightful Watson, earnest, devoted -- ardent, too, and a little inarticulate in his ardor. There are many wondrous lines in it, but my favorite is this:

"You cannot have me safe. You can have me as I am--in love with you--or not at all."

Now that's the kind of high-stakes emotional drama I love. Go forth and enjoy, for the first time or fifth or fifteenth.

This captures their whimsy, their affection, their deep attachment... and, of course, the fact that they're most fully alive in each other's presence. Author's summary: Watch Sherlock, John and Rosie over the years as they celebrate the season as only they can.

Reccer's comments: This charming series of ficlets was written for a 31-day December challenge, using specific prompts for each chapter. The ficlets do make up an entire story, but it is not a linear telling. It jumps back and forth through time, but there is a common thread throughout: how Sherlock, John and Rosie spend and celebrate Christmas together as they work towards forming a family unit. Some chapters take place before John and Sherlock are a couple, and some take place during their established relationship. No matter; it works in a delightful way.

Mary does appear in a couple of chapters, but only as a ghost and a memory.

Author's summary: It all began because Sherlock didn't know Irene's body as well as he thought. He's determined not to make the same mistake with John's.

Reccer's comments: From the title and summary, one would think this fic is based on a slightly cracky premise, and it sort of is. It starts out mostly lighthearted, but then veers into more serious, angsty territory before resolving in a satisfying manner. The author has a knack for drawing out the sexual tension that leaves you breathless for more at the end of each chapter, so reading this while it was a WIP was a special kind of delicious torture!

This story is by the same author who wrote the incredible omegaverse AU "A Fold in the Universe". It takes place mid-ASiB, right after Sherlock finds out that Irene Adler is actually still alive after misidentifying her corpse. Being Sherlock, he gets it into his head that he needs to convince John to let him examine his body so that if, god forbid, something were to happen then Sherlock could be secure in the knowledge that he could correctly identify John's body. At least, that's the excuse he gives John.

In the middle of all of this lighthearted humor, Sherlock discovers something unexpected and sobering that helps bring the two of them together in the most intimate of ways.

Title: Signs Following
Author: vulgarweed
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 24,285 words
Rating: Explicit
Verse: BBC Sherlock

Author's summary: 1976. Bone Fiddle-verse; Appalachian AU. A couple years into their relationship, John and Sherlock are cozily setting up for spring with Mrs. Hudson's expert guidance when a distraught young woman appeals to them for help and sends them on one of their strangest cases yet - in order to solve one murder and prevent another, they must tangle with a sinister preacher and enter the much-sensationalized, little-understood world of Pentecostal Holiness believers who strictly observe Mark 16: 17-18:

(And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.)

Reccer's comments: This takes place in the awesome Bonefiddle 'verse, an AU set in 1970's Appalachia. Considering how well known this verse is, I'm surprised at the comparatively low kudos and hits, so I thought it deserved a shout-out here.

Sherlock and John are an established couple here in rural West Virginia. Don't let the American setting put you off: these are the Sherlock and John that we know and love, just transplanted into a different culture. They are still very much themselves. John is a doctor and a war veteran, and Sherlock is a self-proclaimed detective. Together they solve crimes. For this specific story, it is a retelling of The Speckled Band, using a most unique twist. Here, the villain is a Holy-Roller snake handling preacher who preys upon his flock's vulnerabilities in order to commit murder. It never descends into religion bashing, though. The author deftly navigates between good old Sherlockian skepticism and sensitivity to good people's sincerely held beliefs. It's manipulative evil that is the true villain here.

The reader will surely enjoy John's reaction to Sherlock's prowess with a tire iron, as well as his BAMFness when it comes time to save Sherlock from himself.

Title: Throw Cares Away
Author: Alexaprilgarden
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 7,873 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Sherlock had taught John how to dance for his wedding, and that night, John had kissed Sherlock. And had gone and got married nonetheless. Now, it’s the first Christmas after. After Appledore, after the disaster of John’s marriage. After John returned to Baker Street. And it should have been so easy, so simple, once that John was back. It isn’t anywhere near simple.

Reccer's comments: This is a lovely, quiet story that allows the characters time to breathe. Set in a world where John does not forgive Mary following the events of HLV, but instead returns home to Baker Street.

Sherlock is on eggshells trying to keep John comfortable, and trying to keep his own feelings in check. There's the small matter of John having kissed Sherlock, once, during their dance lesson (in The Measure of Dreams-- a previous story which is not necessary to have read in order to appreciate this one, but a lovely read as well), the memory of which continues to prey on Sherlock's mind and leaves him helpless with longing.

The approach of the first Christmas since Appledore has Sherlock on edge. A case, some carefully chosen words, and a quiet rooftop moment put things into perspective.

On top of it all, Christmas is approaching. And as much as Sherlock tries to despise it, it still makes him sentimental. He never fails to see the momentousness of things happening at Christmas.

He’d rather not have anything happen at Christmas. Because the only thing likely to happen these days, with the small room in his mind palace and the yearning of his heart still under lock and key, is him being his usual self, abrasive with frustration. Rude and aggravating until John finally snaps at him and storms out of the flat. And this time Sherlock isn’t at all sure John would ever come back.
