Title: Excultus
Author: mottlemoth
Pairing: Mycroft/Lestrade
Length: 315,000 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Graphic depictions of violence
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: 23rd-century London is a divided city. Two hundred years of genetic tampering has fractured humanity into subspecies, not all of whom are willing to get along. The capital's crime-ridden streets are now home to some fairly fantastic variants of human - some of them more dangerous than others.

For DI Greg Lestrade, Cross-Human Relations at Scotland Yard, it's all just part of the day job.

But when a horrifying discovery forces him to seek the help of Mycroft Holmes, Head of Criminal Psychology, Greg might just be tested past his limits. Mycroft is unpleasant, unforgiving, and famously impossible to please.

But if Greg needs anyone right now, it's a vampire expert.

With dangerous forces fast on their tail, Greg and Mycroft must work together to avert the vampire threat - before it's too late.

[Mystrade Supernatural/Sci-fi AU.]

Reccer's comments: That author's summary pretty much says it all. Futuristic, Sci-Fi AU where some human subspecies co-mingle openly with other humans -- and some do not. This is basically one big epic casefic, where the mystery to be solved involves murderous vampires, and where DI Lestrade and Mycroft Holmes team up to contain the threat, assisted by some nicely fleshed-out OCs.

I should start out right away by letting everyone know that the only Sherlock canon characters here are Greg Lestrade and Mycroft Holmes. There is no Sherlock. There is no John Watson. If that puts anyone off, feel free to move on. I will stress, however, that you will be missing out on a grand action-packed adventure, where the relationship development between the two main characters is a wonder to behold. And I have never read a fic where I am so enthralled by the many OCs who play their supporting roles with so much heart and soul.

At the beginning of the story, Lestrade and Mycroft are strangers who meet one night and have a one-night stand. Unbeknownst to them both, they will soon be caught up in a whirlwind of unsolved murders that require their particular brand of expertise and will force them to work together for the foreseeable future. As the mystery unfolds and their relationship progresses, it becomes clear that Mycroft is holding his cards very close to his vest, and that he is keeping a very large secret from his partner.

I found this story completely enthralling, heart-stopping, and emotionally satisfying. There are several twists and turns, and unexpected reveals, but it all progressed very naturally within the story, and none of it felt like surprise just for the shock factor or for the sake of cleverness. Some you will see coming, and some you won't. But it all comes together in a perfectly logical way. Please do give it a try.

Verse: The Hound of the Baskervilles (Roxburgh and Hart, 2002)
Author's summary: My entry into Challenge 010 at the Watson's Woes livejournal; an AU story featuring an alternative ending to the 2002 Hound of the Baskervilles. Watson has to face the hound by himself; and the consequences change him in a way he never expected.

Reccer's comments: Ian Hart's Watson was a paragon among Watsons—competent, skilled, active, noble, and valiant—and in "Hounded" he continues to show his stuff. In this AU of the film, Watson gets to Sir Henry in time to save him from being savaged by the Hound, but at the cost of being savaged himself.

But not just savaged, because that dog wasn't just an abnormally large hunting hound. ;-)

What follows is a solid adventure with an ample dose of hurt/comfort. Watson retains his pawky sense of humor (and all the other noble traits we love him for), and Holmes rises to the occasion, determined to be the most loyal friend a new werewolf could want.

Happily, no familiarity with the Roxburgh film is needed, as "Hounded" goes AU from the film just before the film goes AU from the novel. If you already know the basic plot of HOUN, you're in great shape. Furthermore, the fraught Holmes-and-Watson relationship in the film is absent from this story, so again, no familiarity with the film is needed. (This Holmes reminds me more of Cushing or Brett than of Roxburgh; I personally do not consider this a fault, but ymmv.)

"Hounded" also has an incomplete sequel, "The Hour of the Wolf," which is a little angstier in tone than the original. It currently stands at 40K words, and was last updated in 2010. I found it a satisfying read, but I mostly just wanted more Holmes and Watson being good partners to each other — which it delivered, despite the incomplete plot arc.

Title: The Beast of Baskerville
Author: faviconMildredandbobbin / [livejournal.com profile] mildred_bobbin
Pairing: Sherlock/John, Harry/Clara, others
Length: 74,550 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Character death
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: 15th Century/fairy tale AU. An invalided John Watson comes to the isolated village of Baskerville seeking shelter with his sister, only to find himself embroiled in a grisly murder. As the villagers point to a local werewolf legend, the odd but brilliant friar, Brother Sherlock, disagrees, and soon he and John are on the the trail of a very human murderer. As the killer takes another victim, fear and suspicion grips the village, culminating in the arrival of Inquisitor, Friar James Moriarty, who proves more terrible than any supernatural beast could ever be.

Reccer's comments: [livejournal.com profile] mildred_bobbin has written several great fics in this fandom, but this is definitely my favorite so far. It's a medieval AU which is a melange of the first two series of Sherlock, Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose, Janet Lewis's The Wife of Martin Guerre and the 2011 Red Riding Hood movie. It's a tightly plotted, well-paced ensemble piece, veering away from the usual main supporting characters of Lestrade and Mycroft to give larger parts to rarer characters such as Harry, Clara, Henry Knight, Robert Frankland, and Louise Mortimer. Irene as the Mother Abbess is a pointed provocation, and Molly and Moriarty shine in their respective roles as midwife and Inquisitor too, but the real stars are, of course, Brother Sherlock as a keen-eyed Franciscan friar and Master Watson as a peasant foot soldier recently returned from Granada (not only a nod to Granadaverse, but also a real war waged in the late 1400's).

The driving force of the story is the series of horrific deaths plaguing the small village of Baskerville. A werewolf is the supposed culprit, but Sherlock sees a mortal hand and sets out to gather his evidence, with John's help.

Excerpt contains mild gore... )

One thing I thought the author did really well was to make use of the beliefs and superstitions of the era, especially the quotes from the Malleus Maleficarum at the start of every chapter. There are also nice period details for flavour, but it's not so overflowing with references and research that it feels like reading an academic treatise.

The secondary plot is the relationship between Sherlock and John. Due in part to Sherlock's vows and in part to the societal attitude toward homosexuality, it's obviously not an easy road, but I thought the author handled it with respect and not at all in a sensationalist manner. I thought it was a brave move to cast Sherlock as a truth-seeker and rational thinker who nonetheless takes his vows seriously and does try to adhere to the good core of the Church's teachings. He is in fact a heretic for the time period, but not because he is actually an atheist or humanist (or at least his character didn't come across that way to me).

Finally, the story has been illustrated throughout by some very talented artists: [livejournal.com profile] kikislasha, BlueStoneArcher, and khorazir. The art alone would be worth a rec.

In addition to the character death warning (neither of the two leads, but multiple canon characters), there is torture, gore, and mention of non-con. I also really want to add a special warning for
the murder of unborn children
because I think it could be quite upsetting for some readers.

Author's summary: Sherlock is bitten by a werewolf and has to find a way to cope with his new condition

Reccer's Comments: This is the first werewolf story I’d ever read. What hooked me immediately was following Sherlock’s stream-of-consciousness through his madness revealing his dangerous desire for John while warring with his need to keep him safe. John, of course, knows something is wrong. His disbelief, yet unwavering support and steely strength, offer the perfect counterpoint to Sherlock’s condition. The enjoyment here is watching their relationship grow despite these circumstances. An unusual case with government undertones, Harry offering romantic advice, an almost know-it all Mycroft, a creepy female scientist, and hot sex (yes!) are the many pleasures to be had in this fic. So settle down for a completely unrelated to Mother’s Day story and enjoy! (Disclosure: While I did have the opportunity to be a beta for some of the later chapters of this story, I was a follower and fan first. It was a privilege and fascinating to watch the writing process. Thank you trickybonmot!)

Podfic: The Autumn Moon is Bright podfic
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 23935 words
Rating: Mature
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John has two secrets he keeps from Sherlock - he manages this, he thinks, only because Sherlock would find the idea that John is attracted to him just as unlikely as the idea of John being a werewolf. He's not sure what it says about his life, that love and lycanthropy are considered equally impossible events.

Reccer's comments: I was amazed to discover this fabulous fic hasn't been recced here.

John was born a werewolf. It saved his life in Afghanistan and again when Sherlock exploded the bomb at the pool. Later, when Sherlock goes missing, know-it-all Mycroft enlists John's special talent to save his missing brother. Still, Sherlock doesn't know until John is forced to shift in front of him to save his life once again. But Moriarty knows ("people do get sooo attached to their pets").

This is a clever, exciting episodic story told with wit and sharp observation. If you like BAMF!John or werewolf fics, don't miss this one.

Title: How to Earn Your Discharge from the Last Chance Fusiliers
Author: marlowe_tops
Pairing: John Watson/Sebastian Moran
Length: 11453 words
Rating: Mature
Warnings: non-con, graphic violence
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Welcome to the Last Chance Fusiliers, John Watson. There are three ways out. One is getting shot. That’s an honorable discharge. Two is getting shot where it counts. Do send us a letter from hell, won’t you? And three is finally earning your dishonorable discharge.
Plenty of ways to do that.
Reccer's comments: This is one of those stories that I didn't think I would enjoy. It's part of a werewolf AU series, but what captivated me was the author's portrayal of John Watson. He's soldier, a doctor, and a very good man who forms an unlikely friendship with Moran, who is MORE than a bit not good. And yet it all makes sense, and feels perfectly in character.

It is common knowledge that Moran cheats. But his men love him, and have adopted an unofficial regiment-wide policy that if you don’t notice your opponent cheating at cards, you deserve to lose. Few things delight Moran more than being successfully outwitted by one of his men at cheating. The whole regiment is constantly working to come up with new cheating strategies for the games they play, and the favored card games around the fusiliers are picked accordingly. Watson is one of few who doesn't enjoy the attitude. He can keep up with the rest without a problem, and has a better eye for it than most, but it’s common knowledge that Watson won’t cheat, and that even Moran doesn't cheat against Watson, out of respect.

Follow Captain Watson down the rabbit hole.

Author's summary: Written for this prompt: Sherlock is a werewolf who is captured by a facility which wants to experiment on him. When John is placed into his cage they expect Sherlock to attack him, but instead, he tries to mate with John.

Reccer's comments: Brilliant, sexy, suspenseful and romantic - this is an excellent blending of BBC Sherlock with a world in which werewolves exist. I gave this a try on the strength of the excellent A Study in Winning by the same author and it was soooo worth it. I especially loved how Sherlock's deductions and his character in general went so well with heightened sensory abilities of the werewolf and how John reacted to the danger of being locked up with a man about to turn into a deadly beast. Extra points for the brilliant writing of their budding relationship and how their captors react to it.

Title: Easier by Moonlight

Pairing: Greg Lestrade/Mycroft Holmes
Length: 11 730 words
Rating: PG
Verse: Sherlock BBC, AU (werewolves)
Author's summary: Mycroft Holmes is a werewolf, and he has a new friend.

Reccer's comments: This is a story about werewolves, but it is also a story about relationships. We have Mycroft's POV which is slightly less enigmatic/antagonistic than in the tv show, which allows for a gentle telling about him coming to grips when something in his life changes. John only has two appearances in this fic, but he is as awesome and hilarious as usual ("Shut up, Sherlock! I just asked if your brother was having puppies! Oh god!") I actually ended up feeling sympathy for Sherlock, as you can almost feel his hurt and frustration of not being a wolf. As well we have Anthea as a PA/minder! Nicely written with a story that seemlessly combines good characterizations of the BBC characters as well as interesting "werewolf world-building". This fic will leave you feeling fuzzy by the end!

Excerpt: Mycroft never really trusted his memory of events during the full moon. As the brain changed its shape, so did it change its function; his memories as a wolf must be filtered through his human understanding, and vice versa. Therefore, his memories were interpretations, and not strictly true.

But there was no doubt that this interpretation was accurate: there had been another wolf.

Title: Two of a Kind (first in the "Being Sherlock" series) (You can find a podfic of the first story here.)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] argyle4eva
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 1,902 words
Author's summary: All the Werewolf!John and Vampire!Sherlock prompts over on [livejournal.com profile] sherlockbbc_fic seem to have affected my subconscious. The crackbunnies popped out of the mental woodwork last night and gifted me with the prompt, "Sherlock's a vampire; John's a werewolf. Together, they fight crime!" How the hell could I resist writing that, I ask you?
Rating: PG
Warnings: Um...Werewolves and Vampires?
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Reccer's comments: Despite the name, this isn't so much a crossover with "Being Human" as supernatural AU. The stated "crack" level also ebbs and flows during the series, for the record. (I don't think it's really all that cracky, but then...I've really been enjoying all of the supernatural Sherlock AUs that have been popping up, so ymmv.) What can I say? I really love this version of our boys, and the Universe they inhabit. As the series progresses, the worldbuilding just becomes more detailed. I can't wait for more. (Also? I'd really like to podfic the whole series.)

Hi!
Just a few words on our tags and tagging your recs.

Tags are useful search tools for grouping the recs by categories: by pairing, genre, content, and sources for the stories or other fanworks.

We ask that reccers attach tags that are relevant to the works they rec. You don't have to add everything that applies-- for example, not a character tag for everyone who might appear in the story, or every theme or content. But if Molly has a significant cameo, say, that you think people searching for her might appreciate, then by all means list her in a tag. Likewise if you think this is the addiction story people should read, then use the content: addiction tag.

The required aspects to tag are pairing (if it applies), relationship genre (i.e., gen, slash, or het*), and verse (the source: ACD books, Sherlock BBC, Granada, etc.).

The easiest place to see all of the tags available is in this list of tags.

Tagging is enabled only for the author of the post and the mods. Only the mods can add new tags. We have a beginning list up now, anticipating likely categories and characters. We'll add more as recs are made, if characters and pairings, for example, aren't covered already. You can request a new tag to be added by commenting here or by contacting one of the mods. Keep in mind, again, that we'll be adding character tags as additional characters appear in recs.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been abbreviated as SH and JW in pairings and some other places (e.g., content: sick jw). Since this recs comm is open to all versions of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed the simplest way to identify the characters. Lestrade, Gregson, and Dimmock are listed as "inspector" following ACD book canon, and Moriarty is listed only once by his (their) surname alone. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is abbreviated throughout as ACD.

*We won't add a category for "slash-if-you-squint" or similar invitations for the reader to see subtext in a story. If the author hasn't labeled her work as slash, then it's genre: gen or genre: friendship.
