Title: Love Letters
Author: helicidae
Pairing: Jim Moriarty/John Watson, John Watson & Sherlock Holmes
Length: 39,260 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Everything. All of it. There is not a thing that should not be warned for.
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Dearest John... Moriarty sends love letters. When it's over you'll have your own blood and my come in your mouth and on your lips, John, and that'll be the most beautiful sight in the world.

Reccer's comments: Horror. Horrific horrible horror.

Here is the full list of author tags: Mind Games, Bloodplay, Cannibalism, Child Death, Child Torture, Forced Self-harm, Minor Character Death, Necrophilia, Non-con, Body Modification, Rape, Torture, Sadism, Sexual Violence, Starvation, Extreme Underage, Horror, One-Sided Relationship

Moriarty is John's stalker. Almost every horrible thing is an exercise in imagination. Somehow, that makes it worse - there are places people can go in their heads that it might be hard to sell them going in a fic that stayed in character.

There are not enough capital "D"s and colons in the world to express my reaction to this as I read it. Well-regarded published horror does go this dark, but somehow it was just not something I was prepared for in fan writing.

The development of John and Sherlock's relationship throughout is a marvel of authorial ... something. Deftness? Delicacy? John is trying to keep a secret, and Sherlock is trying to uncover it, and it's never entirely certain how their friendship will survive the onslaught of Moriarty's obsession. (This is an S2 canon divergence, and takes Reichenbach a different direction.)

This story was written for the kink meme; the AO3 version is somewhat amended. The effect in the end is a little different, but probably not enough to worry about. Read it twice! But really, not if any of the tags tweak you too hard, because the author does not pull punches.

Title:Method Act
Author: [livejournal.com profile] splix
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Benedict Cumberbatch/Tom Hiddleston, Sherlock Holmes/Mark Gatiss, Benedict Cumberbatch/John Watson, Benedict Cumberbatch/Molly Hooper, Sherlock Holmes/Louise Brealey, Sherlock Holmes/Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch/Mycroft Holmes
Length:136749 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Graphic violence, incest, RPF, consent issues.
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Something very strange keeps happening at 7:35 PM.

Reccer's comments: After an accident, Sherlock Holmes and Benedict Cumberbatch wake up in each other's body - Benedict faced with having to pretend to be a genius and face down supervillains and Sherlock having to adapt to the life of a well loved actor. The author does a great job of expanding on the humour of the premise, showing both men struggling with their fish out of water existence as they try to find a way back to their true homes and the people they love. There is also a smart and intriguing mystery plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I loved how funny and observant this story was, and how well it riffs off of our knowledge of the characters and real people involved in the story. Despite not usually being one for RPF, it's one of my favourites.

Title: Cake and Other Sins
Author: Indybaggins
Pairings: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Mycroft Holmes/Sherlock Holmes, Mycroft Holmes/Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 100.673 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: none
Verse: BBC
Author's summary: AU. Sherlock and John meet as competing bakers on The Great British Bake Off. There’s intense baking, lush recipes and enticing food. Mycroft, guilt, past sins in chocolate and gingerbread. And love. That too.

Reccer's comments: I've read the summary and I've read the warnings and neither had prepared me for this fic. There is crack in this fic, yes. But there's also plenty of angst. It's way more intense, disturbing and serious than you'd think upon seeing it's a Great British Bake Off AU.

I freely admit that while I appreciate this threesome and how John somehow balances things out, and I also quite enjoy Johnlock in here, this fic for me is won by holmescest and quite probably the most fascinating description of this relationship in fandom. Almost all fics that describe Holmes' brothers relationship somehow touch the subject of food, diets and fat jokes, but this is the one ties it all up into one perfectly twisted mix.

I feel I have to say that even if these pairings are your cup of tea, this fic might not be, might be too much in the wrong direction. However it just might hit all of the right buttons and you will realize what a gem it is and how quite possibly it's the most perfect, most twisted love story ever written. Plus, there will be cakes.

Title: The Secret Identity of John Watson
Author: Scifigrl47 on AO3, FF.net
Pairing: John Watson/OFC
Length: 27,714 words
Rating: general audiences
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Taken out of context, John Watson leads a terrifying life. You have to wonder what those poor women he dates think of it, especially if John decides to try keeping one away from Sherlock, and Sherlock decides that it'd be best if he could get rid of her. After all, Mycroft's taught him a thing or two about removing potential 'problems.'

Reccer's comments: Sam's friends say she needs to find "some perfectly ordinary bloke" to date.

John Watson seems so nice and normal. So why do strange, and sometimes dangerous, things keep happening when she's with him? Why do people keep warning her off him with mysterious innuendos? Samantha's friends think he must be a spy. Or maybe a mobster. And who is that creepy, dark-haired man stalking him? Still, he does seem awfully nice. And it's interesting. And sort of exciting.

First of all, this Samantha Carter is not that Samantha Carter. A half point off for lack of originality. Which leaves 99.5 points for thrills, chills, right-on characterizations, a real plot, laugh-out-loud funny, and all round adorableness. Plus snarky commentary from Sam's gal pals.

Treat yourself... )

Title: A Game of Sorts
Author: Eva
Pairing: Gen., James Moriarty/Mycroft Holmes (one-sided)
Length: 5736 words
Rating: M
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Jim plays an end game. Mycroft plays along.

Reccer's comments: I have to admit a certain fondness for fics that depict Moriarty in all his creepy, psychopathic glory. In this fic Jim starts playing a new game with Mycroft (and even after reading this story a number of times, I am still not completely sure what Jim is up to!), and the author is very good at creating an atmosphere of tension throughout the fic. Their late night, cat-and-mouse meetings are suitably disturbing, and Sherlock's horror when he finds out is surprisingly heartfelt. According to the author's notes at the end, this was written because they feel that during the BBC series, Sherlock never really has to face any consequences for his actions, and well, he should. An interesting read!

Excerpt: There was a light at the end of the hall; he was in the study, then. A shame they wouldn’t be meeting in the bedroom. Jim let his hand brush the wall again, but this time he curled his fingers in, so that his nails could scratch.

“Mr. Moriarty,” Mycroft said, his voice cold and yet genteel. Jim had yet to push the door the rest of the way open, and took a moment to let his eyes fall shut and a shudder move through his body, biting his lip against a sigh.

Then he licked his lower lip, making sure it would gleam in the low light, and pushed through the doorway.

Mycroft was sitting at the desk—the large, heavy, wooden desk, in front of the two glass doors that opened out to the garden. A wall and an escape. Jim smiled, taking a moment to let his gaze wander appreciatively: navy suit, white shirt, red tie. Should be respectable, staid; on him, it looked sinister.

Note: Mods, would it be possible to get a tag for this pairing, and perhaps one for "stalking"?

Hi!
Just a few words on our tags and tagging your recs.

Tags are useful search tools for grouping the recs by categories: by pairing, genre, content, and sources for the stories or other fanworks.

We ask that reccers attach tags that are relevant to the works they rec. You don't have to add everything that applies-- for example, not a character tag for everyone who might appear in the story, or every theme or content. But if Molly has a significant cameo, say, that you think people searching for her might appreciate, then by all means list her in a tag. Likewise if you think this is the addiction story people should read, then use the content: addiction tag.

The required aspects to tag are pairing (if it applies), relationship genre (i.e., gen, slash, or het*), and verse (the source: ACD books, Sherlock BBC, Granada, etc.).

The easiest place to see all of the tags available is in this list of tags.

Tagging is enabled only for the author of the post and the mods. Only the mods can add new tags. We have a beginning list up now, anticipating likely categories and characters. We'll add more as recs are made, if characters and pairings, for example, aren't covered already. You can request a new tag to be added by commenting here or by contacting one of the mods. Keep in mind, again, that we'll be adding character tags as additional characters appear in recs.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been abbreviated as SH and JW in pairings and some other places (e.g., content: sick jw). Since this recs comm is open to all versions of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed the simplest way to identify the characters. Lestrade, Gregson, and Dimmock are listed as "inspector" following ACD book canon, and Moriarty is listed only once by his (their) surname alone. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is abbreviated throughout as ACD.

*We won't add a category for "slash-if-you-squint" or similar invitations for the reader to see subtext in a story. If the author hasn't labeled her work as slash, then it's genre: gen or genre: friendship.
