Title: The Theory Of Narrative Causality
Author: [livejournal.com profile] falling_voices
Pairing: Sherlock x John
Length: ??? VERY LONG
Rating: NC-17 / M
Warnings: None applicable
Verse: Sherlock BBC, with cameos from different Sherlock Holmes canons
Author's summary: Sherlock and John are BNFs in Sherlock Holmes fandom. Together, they fight crime. (Always.) And write porn, incidentally.

Reccer's comments: Newcomers may not know of this (amazingly meta) AU fic that was written in the kink meme back before season 2 had aired. The fic spawned a huge fangroup, a roleplay community, and fanworks for the fanfic (we must go deeper). Note: Don't go into it expecting a straight adaptation. The people in this fic are a little different from who we're used to watching on the telly, but they still have the intrinsic values that make them the characters we know and love. John and Sherlock are, as usual, the stars of this fic, but that doesn't mean the other characters aren't delightful as heck. I've personally got a soft spot for Bill.

One of the most intriguing things about this fic is how it's written out as a series of Livejournal (personal, community, and rec) posts and comments, instant messages, and even a freakin' trope page. You're not so much reading the story as you are living it through these glimpses from the internet, if that makes any sense. Also, you get like 5 (steamy) snippets of fanfics (from different canons) in the process of reading one fic, how cool is that?

TL;DR This fic is so meta that it'll make your head spin even as you fall in love with its interpretation of the characters we love faffing around the net like we do.

Excerpt )

Check out all the clickable/scrollable bits, it's one of my (many) favorite parts of this fic.

PS Due to the nature/formatting of the fic, it is near impossible for me to give an accurate word count other than "really long but worth it." Also, don't be fooled by the line that signals the end of a post in the fic, because it'll frequently be a lie.

Title: Left
Author: lifeonmars
Pairing: Sherlock/John

Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: John Watson is left-handed. He’s tried not to let it affect his life, but as any Lefty knows, that’s almost impossible.

Reccer's comments: This fic has already received lots of attention and been recced elsewhere, but I couldn't resist mentioning it here. For one thing, lifeonmars is one of my favourite Sherlock authors; you should check out their other stories as well. For another, it's just a brilliant piece of work.

This is a magical realism AU where everyone has a knack - some kind of special skill - except for left-handed people. Lefties have no knack, and as a result tend to be patronised and pitied, although they have for the most part found at least nominal acceptance and integration into society. Some characters' knacks will be what you would expect them to be; others will be surprising and perhaps humorous. All of them, though, will suit the person to a tee. The story is mostly a retelling of the Great Game, altered of course to fit this 'verse. There are clues scattered throughout leading to a certain conclusion about John; I'll bet you won't come to the right one, though. Very clever and skilful storytelling from a master of the craft.

Author's summary: Mike knew what would happen if he introduced John Watson to Sherlock Holmes. He knew exactly what would happen, and he did it anyway.
Reccer's comments: We only get to see a bit of Stamford on screen, but his character is fleshed out wonderfully here as a quietly but gleefully mischievous instigator who loves to watch sparks fly and has a soft spot for "the mad ones". Mike knows Sherlock, remembers John, and can't resist the urge to put them together and enjoy the best show in London. Seeing both Holmes and Watson through Stamford's eyes is especially fun. I've read this a good half-dozen times and it never fails to make me smile.

Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: "‘Bee Ay Em Eff’. Hm, that's a new one on me. Do you know what it means, Sherlock?"
John might not know what it means, but there are many little ways in which he proves the acronym suits him.

Reccer's comments: John is a BAMF. What more needs to be said? I adore when authors use an 'outside' perspective to let you see a character in different ways and DancingGrimm takes this to a whole new level.  Everyone from Lestrade to Dimmock to Sarah gives us a look at just how much of a BAMF John Watson is, and all the clever ways that acronym can be interpreted. The author does a fantastic job of giving each of the characters distinct voices (Mycroft's chapter was one of my favorite) and the fic is wonderfully lighthearted and funny, reminding the readers (and everyone else) of all the ways our wonderful doctor's earned that acronym.

Author's summary: John doesn't stop for Stamford. Instead, he takes Jefferson Hope's cab home.

Reccer's comments: John doesn't reply to Mike calling his name and instead catches a cab and finds himself climbing endless stairs with a serial killer right behind him. That doesn't do justice though to the general strength of character and the combination of humour and righteous anger that shine out of John here. And that's before John meets the "pushy bloke" in the expensive coat!

Brilliant drama and humour in one place!

Title: Buthal
Author: JessamyGriffith
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 21768 words
Rating: Teen
Warnings: Some violence and gore
Verse: BBC Sherlock AU
Author's summary: Just as every story requires a villain, it also needs a hero. Every fairy tale ought to have magical curses. And every good legend must have a man fighting a monster.

But monsters, like men, come in many shapes and many sizes, and it is not always easy to tell which is which.

A twisted fairy tale. Here be giants.

Reccer's comments: This is a highly unusual story, but it is so well-done and so well-written that I can almost guarantee that you'll be glad you read it. Unless, perhaps, you shy away from creature fics, but even then I would encourage you to give it a try, since it's very different from any other story of the genre that I've read.

It's not readily apparent how the story relates to Sherlock at first, but that is cleared up soon enough. Although things aren't as cut and dried as it might seem, and you'll probably find yourself backtracking to re-read parts in order to catch the clues sprinkled throughout that you probably overlooked.  It is for this reason that I would HIGHLY recommend that you not read the comments first, since they contain spoilers that may decrease your enjoyment of the story.

Buthal is a giant whose reckless actions have placed a curse on his entire race. This curse involves having the giant's heart and a human's interchanged; the giant must then spend his entire existence, extending throughout many lifetimes, searching for his heart. He cannot rest, find relief or redemption until he finds it.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] ivywatcher
Pairing: Gen
Length: 17,153 words
Rating: Teen

Verse: BBC Sherlock
Author's summary: In the wake of the Reichenbach Fall, Greg Lestrade confronts a life that is often complicated, never easy, and not even entirely in order. Here's the thing: Sherlock Holmes was no killer, but he always was a liar. Novella-length, non-linear, and character-heavy. Spoilers for...everything. This is one of my favorites.

Author's Note: Thank you in advance for your reading time! I'm glad to have you here. Nonlinear storytelling turned out to be quite the challenge, and as always, the characters of Sherlock turned out to be fantastic material to work with. As always, your comments, thoughts, and criticisms are gratefully accepted, and entirely appreciated. The title comes from the first stanza of Pablo Neruda's Poem, "Don't Go Far Off":
"Don't go far off, not even for a day, because --
because -- I don't know how to say it: a day is long
and I will be waiting for you, as in an empty station
when the trains are parked off somewhere else, asleep."

Reccer's comments: This a primarily a Lestrade character study beginning from the moment Sherlock jumps in Reichenbach Falls. You are in the hands of a master storyteller. Trust her and Lestrade and take this journey with them. (Although there are no pairings per se, John's grief and strong feelings for Sherlock are featured prominently.) The reader follows Lestrade through the next several months as he pieces together what happened and tries to right his career.

Through his interactions with John's mourning, Mrs. Hudson’s concern, Mike Stamford’s honesty, Mycroft’s reach, and an original character, Sergeant Leigh Hopkins’s earnestness, Lestrade’s strengths shine and his determination grows. There are many strong moments that linger in my mind’s eye, but one of my favorites involves Lestrade, John, and Mycroft at St. Bart’s sitting on a hallway floor and leaning against the wall. The author’s personal challenge to reveal the story in a nonlinear structure is powerful, and I can’t imagine reading it any other way. This is a “treat” I hope you’ll savor.

Pairing: John/Sherlock

Rating: Explicit

Verse: BBC
Author's summary: Nobody Raise Their Voices: In which John has a nice date, disturbs his flatmate, and makes it up to him. When the Sky is Full of Zeroes and Ones: In which Sherlock does his times tables and returns a favor. Having Infinity: In which John goes on holiday, dances with a pretty girl, and resolves a certain situation with his flatmate. Between Thought and Expression Lies a Lifetime: In which Sherlock solves a case, feeds some swans, and has a go at domesticity.

Reccer's comments: I’ve added the title for each story in front of the author’s summary. The first three stories from this series were some of the first Sherlock fics I read so they are quite special to me. The last story was added in August. Together they offer a sexy, thoughtful look into the development of John and Sherlock’s relationship. (Do you see a theme for my recs? *smile* I can’t help myself.) Sophiahelix’s John is both brazen and unsure, and very hot. His scene with Sherlock in the first story…*fans self* The twist is that instead of John working his Sherlock feelings out with a woman away from the flat, here he brings her home while Sherlock listens (among other things). The pleasure for the reader is watching Sherlock’s brain waffle between denying, needing, and accepting his desire for John. The writer balances sexual tension and heat, an edge of angst, and quiet moments believably, and John and Sherlock’s characterizations are spot-on. This is a great series for fans that enjoy reading the first steps in John and Sherlock’s physical and emotional relationship.

Author's summary: Mummy Holmes was admiral of the British space fleet, and her sons were gestated in a synthetic womb called an AGU. When something monstrous burst out of a lieutenant's chest and got loose on board a ship carrying the Holmes family, the unborn second son and was left on board.

A quarter of a century later, the Orbiter 200B is a floating wreck on the edge of the colonised territory. Mycroft Holmes sends Lestrade and a Royal Navy special ops vehicle, the Baker, to the abandoned ship to learn what can be salvaged.

Reccer's comments: I read this story a couple of months ago, but I still get this giddy, excited little flutter in my chest whenever something reminds me of it. I cannot adequately express just how much I adored this Sherlock - the author did a fantastic job of keeping him reasonably in character while accounting for his unusual (creepy? shiver-inducing?) circumstances - but it was almost as much as I adored this Sherlock&(brave-reckless-loyal-good)John. The suspense and the sinister atmosphere kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through.

Excerpt:
John blinked at him. “You,” he looked at the empty space where the tarpaulin had been stretched. “You made that? That was a trap, for those creatures?”

“Yes, for my family,” the man said, standing up. John struggled to rise, and found he only came up to the other man’s nose.

“Your family?”

“They try to eat me, these days,” the man said. Then, for just a moment, his eyes widened with a flicker of emotion. “It’s a liquid sub-zero coolant. I redirect it from the databanks sector through an old petroleum gas pipeline and then recycle the gas back to the condensation facility to maintain the supplies.”

Verse: Sherlock BBC, WWI
Author's summary: Sherlock likes to visit the cemetery. But one day when Mycroft takes him, the ten-year-old boy finds a man sitting on a tombstone he claims is his own marker. And that he died during The Great War. Needless to say, Sherlock makes a friend.
Reccer's comments: This is one of the more unusual Sherlock fics I've come across in a while. Set over the span of many years, from the time Sherlock is ten to the start of ASiP, it features Sherlock, Mycroft, Mummy, and several other characters the reader will find familiar...and Captain John Hamish Watson II, a doctor who died in World War I. He exists now as a ghost, trapped between life and death and unable to remember most of the details of his life, but he's still a doctor and healer, and irresistibly interesting to the young Sherlock.  The development of Sherlock, the ghost, and the relationship between them is well done and fairly unique. Not really kid!fic, not necessarily AU, it's difficult to categorize but a fun read.

Reccer's comments:
This tragic yet hopeful series has haunted me for months. The prose is spare and understated, at times poetic, befitting Sherlock and John's metaphysical experience in IMYTaWG and IBTAfY. Their relationship has a beauty that is as strong and as indomitable as their souls. Irisbleufic's interlacing of "here" and "there" gives the first part a powerful dramatic impact. "There", explored further in IBTAfY, is both mystery and miracle, fragile and (im)perfect. In THOW and the epilogue of this series, unlike most examples of the genre, we see how most of the cast is affected by the death(s). The characterization is excellent; even in the throes of shock or grief the characters, whether Anderson or Molly, Sally or Mycroft, remain true to themselves. A respectful and moving group portrait.

Excerpt from "I Meet You There":
John is already there, arms strong and sure around him.

Covering him as debris rains down, his breath harsh and frantic against Sherlock's sweat-slicked cheek. It's familiar (shouldn't be, they've never), somehow disarmingly sweet. Warmth blooms, no, burns in Sherlock's chest, seeps out between stuttering pulses: his heart and then John's, his heart and then John's, his heart and then John's.

Excerpt from "The Half-Open Window":
Suddenly, Harry's wine is on the floor, and she's sobbing on Mrs. Hudson's shoulder.

"Hate him a little," Mrs. Hudson murmurs. "If it makes you feel better, I suppose. It's an awfully foolish thing he did. Both of them did, really."

"Sod that," Harry hiccups, and, to Mrs. Hudson's surprise, she's laughing. "How can I bloody well hate my own brother for having fallen arse over teacup for some brilliant wanker who made him feel more alive than he'd felt in years?"

Mrs. Hudson cradles her, rocks her like a child.

"You can't, love. Forgive me. Neither can I."

Title: Two Coffees One Black One with Sugar Please (Series)
Author: Linpatootie
Pairing: John Watson/Sherlock Holmes
Length: 25 418 words
Rating: M
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: A somewhat pointless experiment on Sherlock's behalf leads to John having to re-evaluate pretty much his entire life.

To Sleep, Perchance to Smother Your Flatmate with a Pillow: Sherlock wants to conduct a sleep study of sorts. John contemplates smothering him with a pillow.

An Epiphany is Just a Fancy Way of Realising You’re an Idiot: Sherlock and John have something of a relationship crisis, which is odd, since they're not actually in one.

Crocodiles and Cannibals and Putting Things in Sherlock’s Hair: Let’s talk about sex, baby.

The Sum of Us (Mostly Calculated by Everybody Else): John decides to come out. More or less. Not that he's gay or anything. He's just bumming his flatmate.

Reccer's comments: This is a little gem of a series that starts off with an amusing study on sleep, which then turns into a sweet and well-developed story of John and Sherlock determining just what their relationship is to each other. Sherlock is unintentionally hilarious and logical (in a way only he can be!), while John is steadfast and so John-like as he grapples with his changing relationship with Sherlock and what exactly it means to be a straight man in love with another man. I love this fic because it's funny and well-characterized with both John and Sherlock growing and developing in such a natural way. So give this series a read, and be prepared to feel ALL THE FEELS.

Excerpt:

Night 2

The second night John learns Sherlock talks in his sleep. He is teased out his slumber by a few slurred syllables which soon grow into what turns out to be a vaguely incoherent monologue about tea. John listens, fascinated, if vaguely annoyed that apparently Sherlock doesn't even shut the hell up when asleep.

John also learns Sherlock prefers to sleep in something of a dramatic belly-flop and is pushed and shoved on more than one occasion by long limbs snaking their way across the mattress. Sherlock either genuinely doesn’t wake up when John unceremoniously shoves him back, or fakes it. Either way John figures he has every right to be incredibly annoyed and contemplates smothering Sherlock with a pillow.

Night 3

The third night John learns that Sherlock not only talks in his sleep but actually answers questions, too. It might be one of the more delightfully entertaining nights of his life. He’s so incredibly amused he even takes getting accidentally swatted in the face by Sherlock’s hand in stride.

Night 7

John can't believe he's been sharing a bed with Sherlock for an entire fucking week.

Author's summary: As far as initiation rites go, kidnapping a human doctor from a defended town ought to seem extreme. When James Moriarty offers him the challenge, Sherlock never considers saying no. Reccer's comments: Don’t let the “fantasy vampire AU” fool you – this is NOT your average Sherlock-is-a-vampire story.  Bendingsignpost, who is also the author of the  amazing Watches ‘Verse,  has done an outstanding job of world-building here, with nuanced characters, amazingly hot sex and more twists and turns than a room filled with snakes.  Ben clearly has invested a serious amount of time in getting the details right, and I especially appreciated how he wove elements from the TV canon into this alternative reality.  Reading this chapter-by-chapter was an experience in masochism, because even though the updates were frequent, any delay in finding out What Happens Next was torture.  Lucky you, you get to read it straight through.  Go do so right now – you won’t regret it.

Author's summary: In which Molly Hooper gets a job, gets a degree, breaks a heart, has her heart broken, falls in love, keeps a secret, saves a life, runs a morgue, falls apart, pulls it together, and finds exactly what she didn't know she was looking for—not necessarily in that order.

Reccer's comments: Spoilers for S2. This follows Molly from her childhood to the post-Reichenbach era; it fleshes her character out marvellously, expands on the few canon glimpses we have been given of her life in canon, and develops her relationship with Lestrade in a fantastic, thoroughly believable way. Their friendship, the UST between them, Molly's issues with Jim and with Sherlock, Lestrade's marriage, what happens after the end of The Reichenbach Fall, everything is played out in full detail, and the outside look it provides us over the show's events and on John and Sherlock's storylines, when crossed with Molly's, is very interesting. It's a long, marvelous story, and a must-read for anyone who likes Molly.

Verse: Sherlock BBC (Crossover with Temeraire)

Author Summary: In which Watson is a fire-breathing dragon of Her Majesty's Aerial Forces. Crossover with Temeraire - knowledge of the series will help to understand the fic, but is not necessary.

Spoilers for A Study in Pink and general series spoilers for Temeraire.

Reccer's Comments: I have never read Temeraire and I know nothing about it--but I loved this story. I was totally taken by surprise once I finally understood the premise. Dragons are bred and raised to be companions for humans. Traditionally, once they are paired they stay with their pairing for life. If their human partner dies first, they can find another one (although some dragons choose not to). Watson was a young dragon bred for fire breathing who was matched with his human soon after hatching--a young man named John Watson. After a human dies, a dragon can take their human's name in remembrance. Watson leaves the army because he misses his partner, and because he can't breath fire anymore. So, of course, where is a former firebreathing army dragon to find lodgings in London? Watson is cranky and Sherlock is his normal self--with the exception of being quite smaller than Watson.

Title: Reinvent the Pain
Author: Caers, pulangaraw
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 25,768
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Drug use, violence, murder, minor character death
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Sherlock has grown up to be a serial killer. Just how will this impact John Watson when they finally meet?

Reccer's comments: This doesn't really have anything to do with family other than some brief cameos by Mycroft, but it's necessary as a background for the other two stories in the series, which are all about the Holmes siblings. It's also creepy and clever and an amazing read all on its own. If you didn't catch it last summer, give it a shot now because it's really excellent.

Author's summary: A look at Sherlock's childhood and what caused him to become a serial killer.

Reccer's comments: This is the second installment in the series and serves as a flashback. It expands on events referenced in Reinvent the Pain, namely the death of Sherlock's mother, and its aftermath. Like the rest of the series, it's pretty dark and disturbing and completely genius.

Title: Darkness/Influence

Author's summary: The Holmes family comes together for Christmas. John wonders just how he'll survive it, and the aftermath.

Reccer's comments: The third and final installment in the inverse series, and the sequel to RtP. This is a bizarre, terrifying Holmes family Christmas...even more than it would be if this wasn't a fic about murder (and lots of it). Featuring Mycroft of course, Sherringford (my favorite!), and Irene Adler as the fourth Holmes sibling. This fic is insane and bloody and amazing. It will absolutely not disappoint. As usual, there is tons of murder, general creepiness, and some major character death this time. It's not quite rocks fall/everyone dies, but it sure does come close, so prepare yourself.

Reccer's comments: Even if you have no idea what sensory deprivation kink is, you can’t help but imagine that for someone like Sherlock, for whom the world is very noisy, having your senses blocked off could be a highly gratifying experience. The tale is a slow-burning (but definitely burning) take on John recognizing what Sherlock needs, and the two of them spiraling toward each other through the tortuous pathways of their desires.

Hi!
Just a few words on our tags and tagging your recs.

Tags are useful search tools for grouping the recs by categories: by pairing, genre, content, and sources for the stories or other fanworks.

We ask that reccers attach tags that are relevant to the works they rec. You don't have to add everything that applies-- for example, not a character tag for everyone who might appear in the story, or every theme or content. But if Molly has a significant cameo, say, that you think people searching for her might appreciate, then by all means list her in a tag. Likewise if you think this is the addiction story people should read, then use the content: addiction tag.

The required aspects to tag are pairing (if it applies), relationship genre (i.e., gen, slash, or het*), and verse (the source: ACD books, Sherlock BBC, Granada, etc.).

The easiest place to see all of the tags available is in this list of tags.

Tagging is enabled only for the author of the post and the mods. Only the mods can add new tags. We have a beginning list up now, anticipating likely categories and characters. We'll add more as recs are made, if characters and pairings, for example, aren't covered already. You can request a new tag to be added by commenting here or by contacting one of the mods. Keep in mind, again, that we'll be adding character tags as additional characters appear in recs.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been abbreviated as SH and JW in pairings and some other places (e.g., content: sick jw). Since this recs comm is open to all versions of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed the simplest way to identify the characters. Lestrade, Gregson, and Dimmock are listed as "inspector" following ACD book canon, and Moriarty is listed only once by his (their) surname alone. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is abbreviated throughout as ACD.

*We won't add a category for "slash-if-you-squint" or similar invitations for the reader to see subtext in a story. If the author hasn't labeled her work as slash, then it's genre: gen or genre: friendship.
