Title: Beneath These Skies
Author: bendingsignpost
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes, John Watson, Molly Hooper, Bill Murray, Mike Stamford; gen
Length: 37,000 words
Rating: M (for violence and themes)
Warnings: references to past rape, trafficking, and torture, depictions of attempted genocide
Verse: Sherlock BBC, fusion with Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn
Author's summary: An ex-soldier-turned-healer, a priest, and an unhorsed knight flee for their lives after the invasion of their homeland. John didn't expect the road to safety to be easy, but the addition of a petite mage and a scowling former prisoner to their small band opens his eyes to horrors beyond imagining.

Reccer's comments: Bendingsignpost is one of my favorite BBC Sherlock authors. He excels at layered world-building, subtle characterization, well-paced reveals, and powerful prose. His John POV is among the best in the fandom, in my opinion, and I particularly appreciate the way he keeps the characters' emotional expressions trimmed down and indirect without reducing their profundity.

Though basically all his stories are widely read, in comparison to his other works this one has been relatively overlooked. I imagine there may be several reasons for this. It is gen. It is a fusion with a video game universe. And it has some serious warnings attached. But, although it is at times a grim story that deals with very dark subjects, pretty much all of the most disturbing themes are dealt with indirectly through implication and we only glimpse the aftermath. I found it much less harrowing to read than I had initially feared. The elements taken from the video game are a constellation of magical creatures and a political setup for war; to me it simply read like magical realism and my unfamiliarity with "Fire Emblem" was no obstacle at all to my immersion into the story, the political, natural, and supernatural contours of which Ben sketches with great skill.

A romance in the context of this story would have been inappropriate given the level of trauma Sherlock is dealing with, but the power of the relationship he forms with John is striking -- their mutual trust grows quickly, they work well improvising together in the midst of danger, and they wind up protecting each other and making sacrifices to save each other in ways that pay tribute to the depth of their connection. In addition to the lovely character work done on its two protagonists, this story reaches further to examine the ambiguities of warfare, where basically decent people can find themselves in the ranks of an army bent on atrocity, and where even justified battles for self-defense can descend into indiscriminate slaughter. A compelling, imaginative, well-grounded story that leavens its sadness with touches of humor and the healing that comes through friendship and loyalty.

Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 44488 words

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: As if John and Sherlock don't have enough problems already (that whole Sherlock getting shot by Mary thing), now there's a cold case detective from Canada snooping around asking questions about Moriarty.

Kate took her time, wanting to give him time to get settled. When she returned, John had cleared away the tea and Sherlock was sitting in the leather chair wearing sweat pants and a faded white t-shirt under a blue silk bathrobe.

She didn’t know men still wore silk bathrobes.

Thinner than his pictures, paler too. All cheekbones and unruly dark hair. Blue eyes dulled by the pain meds. Needs to shave. Bare feet. Holds one arm against his chest. Like he’s literally trying to hold himself together. Is he aware that he’s doing that?

Reccer's comments: Apologies for my absence this month, time has gotten away from me! I offer up this story by the same author who gave us the brilliant Skip Code. It takes place during HLV and beyond, mostly during that missing gap between Sherlock being shot and Christmas at the Holmes's. It manages to be a Series 3 fix-it fic while also remaining completely canon compliant. It's a testament to the author's skill that they manage to do this in a believable and satisfying manner.

This story is set apart from other fix-it fics by the inclusion of a fascinating female OC, Kate, a character who has her own relationship issues that she's juggling as she gets caught up in a cold case that somehow has to do with Moriarty. We mostly see the Sherlock and John relationship through her eyes, when she shows up at 221B to interview Sherlock - who is still recovering from the gunshot wound that Mary gave him.

There are so many twists and turns in this story; every time clues seem to point in a certain direction, new evidence pops up that indicates something else entirely. How Moriarty and Mary are linked, if there even is a link... if Mary's baby is John's or someone else's... and Kate has her own personal mystery she's trying to solve at the same time. And through it all, John's love for Sherlock is obvious and yet he's still emotionally tied to the idea of wife/marriage/baby.

A brilliant read!

Author's summary: John can't help noticing that Sherlock has gotten decidedly more 'handsy' over the period of time they've known one another, and he wonders whether this might mean something and Sherlock is simply too shy to come out and say it. But, Sherlock, shy? No, that's surely a foolish idea, isn't it?
Reccer's comments: I don't always read fics hosted on LJ, but when I do they are awesome. The relationship and characterizations shown in this story are achingly real. We see John and Sherlock in times of quiet, excitement, and near death, and their responses are very true to character, I think. In additon to that, the sequence of events feels very natural; I love the way each piece of the story flows into the next.

Author's summary: 'Sherlock spent nights lying awake, listening to the rustling of John’s hands on the bedcovers. The dull thumps of John’s head against the headboard. The rhythmic grinding of his teeth. The soft, hungry sounds of his mouth and throat.'

There is an unknown infection rapidly spreading through London, fear, unspoken love, dead who cannot die... and a way for them to come back. Post-zombie AU!

Reccer's comments:

This fic was one of the highlights of my summer. The writing is stellar, the characterizations nuanced, the relationships breath-taking, the moral conundrums complex, and the setting horrifying. The story shifts perspective between its main characters as it follows the devastating progress of an incurable disease. Mycroft's perspective is insightfully rendered as he adopts ruthless measures to stem the spread of the plague while at the same time reluctantly supporting Sherlock's attempts to cure John after he seems long lost to infection.

This story portrays the deeply generous love between Sherlock and John, and Sherlock and Mycroft, without ever slipping into sentimentality. Its central characters move and breathe with extraordinary detail and emotional integrity. The intense crises they each face bring out the core qualities of their personalities. I think it's an amazing piece of work.

(Possible warnings: this fic deals with end of life issues and caregiving for debilitated loved ones; it portrays suicidal ideation and mentions suicide and euthanasia; it also contains some imagery that is reminiscent of the Holocaust.)

Reccer's comments: A fast and furious thriller that will keep you perched on the edge of your seat while reading.

John and Mary are firmly settled in suburban life. Every now and then John worries faintly because Sherlock has completely disappeared from the radar. Mycroft, as ever, is extremely unhelpful.

Then John’s life takes an unexpected turn and in less than twenty-four hours he finds himself on the continent, running for his life together with Mary. They end up in Eastern Europe and there he finds Sherlock, horribly changed and apparently having sold his soul to Moriarty, or worse…

With the Holmes brothers however, nothing ever is what it seems to be.

Warnings: violence and realistic depictions of the consequences of drug abuse
Author's summary: When Greg Lestrade meets Sherlock Holmes, the brilliant young detective seems to have left his past as a drug addict far behind. But when one of their cases pitches Sherlock headlong into a relapse, Greg is determined not to lose him – whatever the cost to himself.

Reccer's comments: Remember that scene in TRF when Greg texts John to let them know they’re coming over to 221B? That’s not the done thing for a police officer, isn’t it? But this is Lestrade, who Sherlock considers the best of the lot. And this story shows why Sherlock needs him as much as Lestrade needs Sherlock.

I know of few stories in the fandom that do Lestrade so much justice. He’s shown to be a fallible, weak human being, just like the rest of us really. Committed to his work but at the end of the day all he wants is to relax with a beer and a football match on the telly, followed by a cuddle and perhaps a little extra something with the wife. Sadly, for some reason he can’t even fathom himself, his marriage is failing, and what he ends up with after a long workweek is a strung-out junkie on his doorstep.

Because he’s also decency personified, always willing to give someone a second chance, to look at things from the other’s POV (even if he doesn’t really get it), to allow he might be wrong, and willing to work around the rules if the rules are just plain silly.

All that is touched upon in this beautiful story, which shows why one needs a pair of extraordinary creatures like the Holmes brothers to recognise the exceptional human being Lestrade really is beneath that innocuous exterior and unfortunate raincoat.

Author's summary: After getting injured on a case, Sherlock wakes with no memory of the last ten years of his life. He's left in the care of one John Watson - his flatmate, apparently - and is forced to navigate the life of a stranger, discovering things about his current self that leave him feeling off-kilter and very much alone. Luckily, John is there to see him through it.

Reccer's comments: This is a beautiful story that, although it's an eventual romance, also does a brilliant job of highlighting the friendship and bond between Sherlock and John, emphasizing the love that's only possible when there's a strong foundation and shared history. And even though Sherlock doesn't remember that shared history, it still shines through in their interactions and in John's gentle patience.

The author does a wonderful job of describing Sherlock's confusion and frustration at not being able to even remember what sort of person he is, let alone having no memory of his friends and acquaintances, or even of his current occupation. It got me thinking how much we all take for granted with our memories, and realising how disorienting it must be to have an entire decade of one's life just suddenly wiped away. All the little things one learns and experiences during that time that help shape the person that you are. A very thought-provoking piece that ends in a good place and leaves the reader highly satisfied. Enjoy!

Author's summary: Sherlock Holmes, John Watson, and Mycroft Holmes had never been under the illusion that they'd beaten Moriarty at his games, but the uneasy truce that had been struck had become a fairly comfortable place. That is until strange reports start to reach Whitehall, a friend falls ill, and John notices changes in Sherlock that he can't begin to explain.

Reccer's comments: This is actually a sequel to Be Here Now, which I'm assuming most people have already read, but if not you'll probably want to read that one first for context.

This story is full of angst, tension, and action-packed drama that will barely let you catch your breath before another heart-stopping scenario drops into your lap. In other words, much like the prequel. It takes place post-Reichenbach and goes AU after series 2.

Sherlock and John are back in London after a truly harrowing experience going against James Moriarty Senior, a true psychopath with an agenda that goes far beyond revenge for his son's death. At the opening of this story, Moriarty has not yet been neutralized, making our heroes still tense and anxious as they wait for him to make his next move. When he does, in spectacular role reversal it's up to John to do whatever it takes, including sacrifice himself, in order to spare Sherlock a horrifying and painful death.

As it turns out, it's not just *Sherlock's* life that hangs in the balance...

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: At age nineteen, Sherlock Holmes dropped out of university to become a drug addict.

Reccer's comments: There are a lot of fics out there where Sherlock does drugs and ends up on the streets, but this is one of the few that I felt really convincingly dealt with the psychology behind Sherlock's actions in a way that was in character, realistic and detailed. Basser's take on Sherlock is unusual in fandom, potraying him as suffering from a form of ADHD, which is not a diagnosis I'd have thought of for Sherlock but a very convincing case is made for it and how it affects him and his ability to relate to others.

I love the author's take on Sherlock and Mycroft's relationship and how their behaviour each fuels each other's insecurities, Mycroft's spying aggravating Sherlock's paranoia and anxiety, Sherlock's rebellion and drug abuse a source of terror for Mycroft.

Basser also creates an original love interest for Sherlock, Eric Crenshaw, who is one of the more endearing OCs I've encountered - he is a total contrast with Sherlock, from a very poor background, sweet natured and streetwise. It's very interesting to see Sherlock interact with such a different character, and their loving but doomed relationship is handled very well.

If you like stories that delve deep into character's psychologies in new and fascinating ways this could be one for you!

Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Violence, Minor Character Deaths (including children, as happened during the war)

Author's summary: Ireland, 1920. There's a war on, but no one seems to be playing by the rules. John Watson, injured and unemployed after his time at the Front, joins up with the special forces sent over to keep the peace, but when he meets Sherlock Holmes, the second son of the local lord, he begins to lose track of which side he is on.

Reccer's comments: True history AUs are rare indeed in any fandom, primarily because it takes so much research and practice to richly communicate a complex foreign culture and tell a good fictional story. Most history AUs require years of research to get to the point where the author can adroitly share the cultural and social realities of the peoples living in the past. Therefore, it's no surprise that most authors find it already challenge enough to skillfully create a genre AU like a Western. It's frankly a miracle that this fandom has been blessed with more than one history AU, let alone more than one that is as beautifully wrought as this one.

That lbmisscharlie loves 20th-century Irish and British history is made abundantly clear from the first chapter. John Watson, soldier of King and Country, is not patrolling Afghanistan, but another restive part of the British Empire, Ireland, just as England's grip is slipping. Although BBC!John never has reservations about his deployment to Afghanistan or what he did there, the John of this story will grow to question what he does in Ireland. Without slipping into overt preachiness, the author makes vivid the cultural clashes and how the characters choose to navigate them. Both sides commit atrocities, leaving one wondering who really is in the right.

John and the other canonical characters like Sherlock and Molly are deftly smoothed into their AU roles. For the most part, the political, social, and cultural beliefs and values they express and act on as English and Irish of the 1920s are blended skillfully with the traits of the BBC characters. Alterations to characters are made purposefully. For example, John is a not an officer or doctor in this fic, something that allows the author to play with class differences in England and in Ireland. Him not being a doctor is, more than once, subtly presented as a lack; something John could be, but never had the opportunity given his social class (several rungs below ACD's Watson for sure and maybe below BBC!John as well).

Of the many OCs, Eva stands out. Both Eva and Molly demonstrate the challenges of women living in Ireland during the troubles of the 1920s. They might support Irish independence, but the violence is personally painful, compelling them to look or hope for alternatives to the high costs of war. These women might risk themselves for Sherlock at different moments of the plot, but it is clear they have lives and concerns outside of Sherlock's Work.

Apart from the layered portrayals of major and minor characters, there is the vibrant sense of place throughout. From the bloody fields of the Continent near the end of WWI, to London and many locations in Ireland (primarily in and around Macroom), the scenery is beautifully rendered, often amplifying the mood of a particular scene. One of many examples is a cinematic rendering of the interior of the Honan Chapel on the grounds of University College in Cork, a setting that conveys the menace and mystery of what is facing John, before suddenly inspiring a brief moment of wonder and nostalgia:

Scrubbing his hands through his hair, John looks around the small chapel once more. The weak candlelight barely penetrates the dark corners, its flickering light producing strange, monstrous shadows in the lurking depths. Bracing one hand on the pew, John hauls himself to his feet and makes his way to the wall. Thrusting the taper in front of him, he traces the walls with his hand as he surveys the perimeter, noting anything that could be used as a weapon: this heavy candelabra, that bible stand, the blunt granite edge of the font. The altar is bare but for an embroidered altar cloth; underneath is empty.

From the altar, John walks down the steps back into the nave, testing the stability of the pews as he passes down the centre aisle. Dead ahead, St Patrick in his emerald robes offers a benediction, while down each side of the nave saints less familiar pass judgement. Pausing in the middle of the aisle, his eye is captured by a brilliant column of blue, its deep tones blending to amethyst in the fading light, which leads to an imperious face with a sharp, beaked nose. But for the long mass of crimson curls, the face, with the haughty set of its eyes and the thrusting, stubborn chin, could be familiar. Some forgotten ancestor of Sherlock’s, perhaps? Amused, John steps closer, craning his neck to examine the details, when his eye focuses and he frowns.

Surrounding the figure, at feet and head, are sparkling, crimson bees, their wingspan the breadth of a man’s spread palm. In one hand, the figure holds a miniature of the chapel, formed from golden beeswax, and John is startlingly thrown back to the summer. To Sherlock’s outstretched thumb, coated in honey, to his caring hands on the hives. John’s laugh, when it breaks the silence, is hoarse, peculiar and cracked. Beekeepers, watching him.

I could go on and on about the many virtues of this lovingly crafted fic, but I urge you to see for yourself!

Author's summary: Sherlock won't give up looking for Moriarty; John is losing patience. Neither of them are coping as well as they would like. (Post episode 1.03, The Great Game)

Reccer's comments: This is another of the first stories I read in the BBC fandom, and I still find it wonderfully emotionally complex and intriguing. Like many authors in the hiatus between S1 and S2, BlackEyedGirl imagined a scenario in which the bomb at the end of The Great Game did explode -- Sherlock and John each emerge alive and to some degree traumatized, but the fact that they shared the same inciting experience does not mean that they understand one another's reactions to it. They are each aware that the other is hurting, but they don't know how to talk about it and they misread one another repeatedly while still doing their best to protect each other.

John, in particular, is very worried about Sherlock's seeming obsession with catching Moriarty, and he thinks it is a sign that Sherlock is captivated by the challenge he represents even though it is likely to get both John and Sherlock killed. The truth, of course, proves to be more complex than that.

This is an insightful character study, an ambiguous but beautiful romance, a journey through the aftermath of trauma and a story that kept surprising me the further I read. There were a few lines and turns of phrase that felt like they swept a rug out from under me.

(That being said, the story is unbetaed and there are a few SPAG errors, if that kind of thing bothers you. But it really is cleanly and cleverly written, and I encourage you to give it a try.)

I hope you'll enjoy it.

Reccer's comments: In some ways, this is a very familiar story. Sherlock and John are adrenaline junkies. Eventually they can no longer resist each other. Their candle burns at both ends, it may not last the night. So many people tell variations of this theme in so many amazing ways, but this one stands out to me as beautifully conceived and well-characterized. It shifts confidently between action and lyricism, between cynicism and romance.

It's very hard to carry off a sustained metaphor when describing a relationship; this fic threads the needle in my opinion, and creates images both memorable and bizarre. It also catches a very Series 1 sense of Sherlock and John just as they're beginning to know each other and to be puzzled by the ways that the two of them together seem to -- against all odds -- work.

There's a reckless joy portrayed here, and the author takes care to make the recklessness disquieting and the joy immense.

Post-Reichenbach return Mystery-Spot-style. Because returning from the dead or being stuck in a time loop isn’t already angsty enough in itself. Not S3-compliant.

Reccer's comments: I love stories where Sherlock is stuck in a time loop because the very idea of a time loop is so contrary to his impatient nature. He’s a creature of habits, obviously, but those home comforts mainly serve as a necessary interlude between all the excitement and adventure with something new always just around the corner.

A time loop however, is exceedingly dull, with the same thing happening over and over again while Sherlock has to try and find out how he can change the pattern.

In this post-Reichenbach fic the author has returned Sherlock to a world that’s slightly off from the surroundings he said farewell to when he decided to jump. John is angry with him, shouting at him, running out on him and what’s the broken chemistry set doing on the kitchen table? Sherlock is left trashing through possible answers. Of course he doesn’t learn of the truth until he decides to turn to Mycroft for advice.

Then it suddenly all becomes so very, very clear.

You really, really shouldn’t read this if you don’t like unexpected turns in stories. I really can’t say what it is for that would spoil the cleverly crafted story. But if you like surprises, even potentially upsetting ones, I’m convinced you’ll be as smitten with this story as I am.

Author’s summary: Mycroft remembers the last time he and Sherlock were together. Set a few months after Sherlock's start at Oxford university.

Reccer’s comments: This series turned me into a dedicated Holmescest lover. The essence of the genre is all there; Mycroft’s sense of guilt with regard to their innocent parents, the sense of awareness of and disregard of the social taboo, the need for secrecy. Then there’s the careful manipulation of the brother who thinks he’s the one doing the manipulating. The thrill of the chase, over and over again. The mutual trust and understanding. Their realisation that they’re unique and this is who they are. Sherlock has already understood this a long time ago, and steadily works at undermining Mycroft’s heroic attempts at resistance. Poor Mycroft, there’s so much at stake for him – a career, a life – but much like any great hero his fate is chiselled in stone with capitals and all the gods are working against him. This, after all, is what Holmescest is about. Really, it’s so much more than the Holmes brothers having sex. If that was all there was to it, it would be boring. There is sex in these stories as well, gushingly hot sex in fact, but at the same time it’s so heartfelt and tender it makes something catch in your breast while reading.

Reccer's comments: In the honored tradition of sports AU's, this one shines right up there with the best of them. In this incarnation, John and Sherlock are Formula 1 racers, competing both with and against each other in a high-powered season that takes them around the world.

Part of the fun of this story is the introduction to F1 racing, from the technology to the strategy to exotic venues including Melbourne, Malaysia, Monaco, Bahrain, Shanghai, Barcelona, and Sochi (where Putin is in for quite a shock!). The fic is also peppered with real people from the racing world like Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastian Vettel, and Lewis Hamilton, giving it an extra layer of authenticity.

The author is a self-proclaimed fan of Formula 1, and that enthusiasm comes through in the emotional investment of the characters as well as every exciting race commentary. Don't be put off, though, if you don't particularly like racing or cars; the technical stuff isn't overdone and never detracts from the insanely intense relationship between John and Sherlock as their on-track rivalry spills over into some of the hottest sex this side of Silverstone:

Reccer's comments: This is a duet of two views of the same night at Baker Street, when John brings Sherlock home from the hospital after being shot. Either part would already be strong on its own, as is exemplified by the beauty of prose such as this:

They are a warm bay of heartbeats, pulsing at the shore. Capillaries and veins of currents that suck at their feet and drag them deeper. Deeper. John would stay here forever, waiting for the hurricane to descend. He thinks of Mary and remembers that storms used to be named after women. There was a reason for that, he thinks, but knows that's unfair. Thinks of the tsunami that is Sherlock, the long string of his disasters. John floating face down in his wake.

Taken together, though, the mini-series attains an extra dimension of depth and emotion. Especially fascinating is how each man appears so distant and controlled to the other, but when we see their point of view, we realize what an absolute mess each of them is. It packs a tough emotional punch, but the resolution makes it all worth it.

Contains infidelity and nonconsensual drug use.
