Verse: Sherlock BBC, fusion with Star Wars
Author's summary: "He's a freak, you know." Donovan's sneer bleeds into her voice. "A Jedi washout. Such a nutter that even the damn mystics didn't want him." John and Sherlock - a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.

Reccer's comments: Here we are at the end of the month, and given that a new, good Star Wars movie has recently come out to restore fandom love for that galaxy far, far away, let's celebrate with this thoughtful, interesting piece. It explores Sherlock and John from their pre-series experiences through 'A Study in Pink,' all re-imagined to fit beautifully within the Star Wars universe. I find Sherlock's history particularly interesting here, especially his brush with the Dark Side and the battle within him between his addictions and his determination to control his own mind. A fascinating character study that traces an iconoclastic Jedi drop-out and a war-torn rebel medic who wind their way through great perils only to find each other and begin their shared journey with, dare I say it, a new hope.

Please note, the story is marked as the first in a series, but the intended sequels never arrived, so it is a standalone. However, it works wonderfully as a oneshot, and I hope you will enjoy it!

As always, I have really enjoyed sharing some of my favorite stories this month, thank you all and thanks to the mods for keeping this comm alive <3

Author's summary: The name they use on the small obituary in the Times is not the one she was born with, but it's the one she chose.

Reccer's comments: I just stumbled across this story this evening, and it is so well done. A quiet, relentless, clear-eyed look at the aftermath of Soo Lin's death in The Blind Banker, focused particularly on the ways that she is remembered and forgotten, the different facets of her character which were noticed or overlooked by others, and the elements of her story that died with her as well as those that lived on. A complex, at times bleak, but intelligent and ultimately beautiful vignette. Also, Molly is not in the story for long, but I really love the role she plays.

For those who, like me, would need to look up the translation, "Jie Jie" means "older sister."

Pairing: Holmes/Watson
Length: 3,143 words
Rating: PG
Warnings: kidfic

Verse: Ritchie Films

Author's summary: Amongst the flowers and butterflies, two young boys confess some things they won't understand until it's too late, But during that one day in the park, when it was just Sherlock and John, nothing else mattered but making the other smile, When you find a friend as special as him, you do your best never to forget, no matter what comes up.

Reccer's comments: I'm not usually a big fan of kidfic. OK, I confess, I usually run the other way when someone mentions it, but this one is just so sweet and innocent, without being at all cute. The scene at the park is beautifully done and it captures the essence of their relationship in the '09 verse so perfectly, I just had to rec it. It makes perfect sense in this context that they met as children and then continued their relationship as grown ups.
I'm not familiar with [livejournal.com profile] florfina at all, unless she writes under another name somewhere, but this story is masterfully done. I'm looking forward to reading her others.

It's just a kid!Sherlock hugging a stuffed!John, but part of me melted into a puddle of goo while the other part felt my heart crack right in two. Although fluffy and cute, at the same time I could feel the aching loneliness of a young Sherlock whose only friend is a stuffed toy. Reccer's comments: 5+1 ficcery at its finest. This little gem is sweet and funny, with just the teeniest bit of angst - but just a tiny bit. It follows Sherlock through five phases of scientific experimentation during five different phases of his life, and concludes with Sherlock and John being happily retired in Sussex where they continue to experiment together. My favourite part was the first section, in which Mycroft's reaction to Sherlock's antics is priceless and will resonate with older siblings everywhere. Enjoy!

Reccer's comments: Sherlock discovers John was never read the Winnie-the-pooh books as a child; John has nightmares and difficulty sleeping - are the two facts related? Sherlock investigates scientifically.

This is a really funny and adorable look at Sherlock taking care of his friend in his own madcap and offbeat way, with some really interesting insights into both men's childhoods, along with some intriguing hints about Sherlock's relationship with Lestrade. It's also wittily written and heartwarming, definitely a good choice for a rainy day.

Author's summary:John Watson has been saving Sherlock's life for a very long time, even if he doesn't know it.

Reccer's comments: This is one of the earliest fics I read in fandom, and it's one I come back to - its a elegantly structured love story, using a similar conceit to the Time Traveller's Wife: John appears at Sherlock's side throughout his life whenever Sherlock is in severe distress but neither of them know why. The writer beautifully evokes the strength of feeling between John and Sherlock, John's distress at being unable to help young!Sherlock tackle bullies and family tragedy and Sherlock's frustration at never being able to hold on to John. The conclusion and resulting explanation for John's time travel is very neatly done in my opinion.

There are some dark themes touched on in this fic, so please read the warnings but it's overall a heartwarming and very touching read.

Length: 3,500 words

Verse: Sherlock BBC fusion with Antoine de St. Exupery's The Little Prince
Author's summary: none given

Reccer's comments: This is one of the very first fics I ever read in the BBC fandom, a kinkmeme entry from 2010 that has stayed with me for half a decade now. It is a haunting, lovely fusion in which Sherlock is The Little Prince, just arrived upon a world that is wholly new to him. The story splits itself into fragments of possibilities -- what might happen to this otherworldly child, and who might he encounter? The glimpses of his alternate futures are poignant and in most cases quietly tragic, but they are ultimately "what didn't happen," while the through-line of the tale follows "what did happen" to Sherlock -- he met Mycroft, the one person in the world who was prepared to recognize him for what he was.

In relatively few words, the author manages to create a story of complicated happiness in which we see just how many bullets Sherlock dodged on the way to his own unique destiny. I have rarely loved Mycroft more than I love him in this story.

(Note: If this is your first time reading a fic on the meme, please be aware that comments from readers are interspersed between installments of the story -- don't let the comments fool you into thinking you're at the end! The story isn't over until you reach part 5 of 5 and the happy conclusion).

Length: 100.673 words
Rating: Explicit

Verse: BBC
Author's summary: AU. Sherlock and John meet as competing bakers on The Great British Bake Off. There’s intense baking, lush recipes and enticing food. Mycroft, guilt, past sins in chocolate and gingerbread. And love. That too.

Reccer's comments: I've read the summary and I've read the warnings and neither had prepared me for this fic. There is crack in this fic, yes. But there's also plenty of angst. It's way more intense, disturbing and serious than you'd think upon seeing it's a Great British Bake Off AU.

I freely admit that while I appreciate this threesome and how John somehow balances things out, and I also quite enjoy Johnlock in here, this fic for me is won by holmescest and quite probably the most fascinating description of this relationship in fandom. Almost all fics that describe Holmes' brothers relationship somehow touch the subject of food, diets and fat jokes, but this is the one ties it all up into one perfectly twisted mix.

I feel I have to say that even if these pairings are your cup of tea, this fic might not be, might be too much in the wrong direction. However it just might hit all of the right buttons and you will realize what a gem it is and how quite possibly it's the most perfect, most twisted love story ever written. Plus, there will be cakes.

Title: Gentry
Author: goldenusagi
Pairing: Sherlock, Mycroft. The author says "basically gen with a hint of potential Sherlock/John."
Length: 3,100 words
Rating: T
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Sherlock and Mycroft came from a warm home with loving parents, though you’d never suspect it from looking at them. There is a reason.

Reccer's comments: All year goldenusagi and entanglednow have been writing a pair of stories every month in which Sherlock is a magical creature of some kind -- they post their stories on the last day of the month, so we get complementary, often wildly divergent tales that explore the dazzlingly different tones and directions that can grow from the same basic prompt. Their whole series is delightful and it's been one of my favorite fanfiction events to look forward to throughout the year. I hope they will keep going into 2015! This is goldenusagi's entry for September, when they were writing about Fae!Sherlock.

"Gentry" is a starkly beautiful, melancholy exploration of the Holmes children as changelings (fairy children substituted for kidnapped human infants). It explores the sense of abandonment, of inexplicable otherness, that defined Mycroft and Sherlock but also cut them off from human means of comfort and connection. It looks at the cold but unbreakable bond between them, based on a sense of kinship and mutual isolation. And in the end it raises the hope that Sherlock may be able to find his place in the mortal world.

It's a lovely, sad fairy tale, that ultimately uncovers a glimmer of hope.

(If you like it, I'd encourage you to also follow the link to entanglednow's story and appreciate the very different Fae!Sherlock entry that author has crafted! These stories are most fun if you read them in pairs, as they were written and posted.)

Jim and Sev, growing up together.
Reccer's comments: This is a really stunning take on Moriarty's childhood, that works really, really well with the slippery, psychopathic BBC version of this character. Little Jim Moriarty is just a little - off from the getgo, and this fic gives him a backstory that explains every little thing about him as an adult. As well-executed as that is, Moriarty isn't the star of this story - it's Sevita Mukherjee, a young Indian girl coming into her own in the threatening and violent world of Aylesbury in the eighties. This reimagining of Sebastian Moran is so brilliantly envisioned that she will take your breath away with her fighting spirit and stark rebellion against the fate projected on her as a brown socially disadvantaged woman. I am someone who rarely reads Moriarty-centric or Moran/Moriarty stories, but pasiphile is one of those writers who will give you a version of these characters that will touch you deeply, whether or not you were interested in them from the start or not. In this version, with one half of the couple genderswapped, pasiphile also shows us just how subversive het stories can be, when executed well.

Author's summary: The truth is, Joan Watson has always loved a good mystery. This was written before "M" aired, so spoilers up through 1x11, "Dirty Laundry."
Reccer's comments: What it says on the tin: a collection of moments as Joan grows up, highlighting her life-long attraction to mystery stories and determination to work hard and succeed. Jossed, as it was written in the middle of season 1 and extrapolates to her staying on as a detective, but the backstory works regardless. The scenes portray Joan alone by choice - reading a favorite Poe story, seeking solitary study space because getting the best grade in the class is more important than the camaraderie of her not-so-driven friends - but also soaking up the companionship of a kindred spirit like dry soil after the first rain. The concluding section is now AU and introduces her partnership with Sherlock at the moment she decided to stay on after her sober companion contract ends. It features a charming negotiation of her terms with Sherlock. I don't think I've read another fic that introduces the Holmes & Watson partnership at this moment, without reference to who they were when they first met; feels lighter without the weight of malpractice and addiction. Not that their histories are denied by implication; it's simply not the view from this window into Joan's life. I always love good backstory and in particular exploration of why Joan wants to work with Sherlock as the show still hasn't said much about that.

Length: ca 16 500 words
Rating: Teen and up.
Warnings: Discussion of underage sex and possible dub-con.
Verse: Sherlock BBC.

Author's summary: No coherent summary available, but a patchwork of the chapter summaries sounds like this:

This story contains the mystery of a stolen Mercedes, talk of Facebook Etiquette, and Sherlock taking off his trousers. Twice. And telling us what kind of shampoo he uses. John comes out with some impressive Swears. Sherlock is an Air Kisser and a Shy Pisser. Lots of Mycroft being badass. John making Fake Sex Noise and Sherlock thoroughly abusing the Welsh language.

Reccer's comments: The summary, though the patchwork is my work, the words and descriptions are all [livejournal.com profile] r_scribbles and the fic is written with just the same humor and sass. That last part, about Sherlock thoroughly abusing the Welsh language, is by the way how I think about this fic in my mind library and I smile every time I do so because this fic is delightful.

This is my absolute favourite of the “pretending to be a couple”-trope, partly because it’s not an excuse to get the boys together, but mostly because it’s such a fun, yet moving, fic. It’s a touching story about friendship and the ridiculous things you sometimes end up doing for your friends. It’s a post-pool fic, so parts (like Sherlock’s family history) have been jossed, but that doesn’t take anything from the fic. It doesn’t portray Victor Trevor in a very good light, so know that going in if you’re a Victor fan.

I put in links to all five chapters because there is no “next chapter” or the like at the bottom of each.

Author's summary: The British Government accidentally clones Sherlock Holmes. Which brings a baby to 221B Baker Street.

Reccer's comments: Well, this obviously has to have a rec done for it. This is currently the most popular Johnlock fic on AO3 based on kudos. So what makes it so great?

For anyone who doesn't know the story, the premise is that Sherlock has been cloned without his knowledge, and the baby ends up in John and Sherlock's care. What might have been a cracky premise turns out to be one of those fics you just want to crawl into and curl up inside and never leave.

One thing that made this fic attractive to me was the fix-it aspect. Sherlock basically gets to relive his entire childhood - well, babyhood and toddlerhood anyway, which is as far as the story takes us - but this time, everything gets done right. The way he would have wanted it. The way that would have made him happy. And if that wasn't enough to tug on your heartstrings, John is right there being his champion every step of the way, defending all of Sherlock's somewhat unorthodox choices.

Excerpt... )

Then there is the lushly gorgeous relationship development between John and Sherlock. Have you ever seen one of those videos of the dog greeting his master when he comes home from military service? That's how reading every interaction between John and Sherlock in this fic made me feel. Like bursting with happiness at how perfect it is, and maybe a bit choked up.

And of course there is a case. Because where exactly did Sherlock's clone come from in the first place? And... don't those people want him back?

Throughout it all is the astonishing little Oliver, who's both entirely normal and entirely Sherlock, and both John and Sherlock aim to keep him that way.

It's funny, it's heartwarming, it's wistful, it's touching, and most of all it's a feel-good fic of the first order.

Author: Solshine
Pairing: Gen, focuses on Mycroft and Sherlock
Length: 4,500 words
Rating: not rated, I would say T for minor character deaths
Warnings: minor character deaths including a child
Verse: Sherlock BBC fusion with Peter Pan
Author's summary: Sherlock has always been incredible, has always been cocky, has always been childish. He just wasn't always Sherlock. This is the story of how Peter Pan left Neverland.

Reccer's comments: J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan is the perfect fusion for Sherlock: Peter canonically crows compliments to himself ("O the cleverness of me!"), dashes from adventure to adventure (most of which involve pirates), constantly forgets/deletes everything and everyone that fails to hold his attention, and takes terrible risks without any understanding of real life consequences. Neverland is an ageless, immortal Boys Own Adventureland where Peter gets to endlessly boss everyone about.

This story introduces Mycroft into that world. Dubbed "Brolly" by an absent-minded Peter who finds his umbrella more memorable than his name, he becomes the fiercest and most inscrutable Lost Boy because he is the only one who truly understands the dangers of Neverland and of the real world. He appoints himself Peter's protector, and ensures that his childish captain continues to emerge unscathed from -- and incomprehending of -- all the perils surrounding him.

But Mycroft can't protect Peter forever.

I find this a breath-taking reimagining of both Peter Pan and Sherlock; it captures the magical, melancholy tone of the original work as well as its clean elegance of phrasing. I have rarely loved Mycroft more.

Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John was brave and clever and loyal, a commoner who longed for an exciting life. Sherlock was dashing and brilliant and passionate, an Earl’s son who longed to solve crimes. Being a Tale of Glorious Adventures, Love Letters, Treachery, Longing, Secret Identities, Deathbed Confessions, First Kisses, Daring Escapes, and True Love.

Reccer's comments: So, one day I chanced upon this fic and downloaded it to my e-reader. Then I sat down and started reading and the world around me ceased to exist until I reached the end, which, unfortunately, came all too soon.
Sadly, I don’t occupy a minor position in the British government or else I would decree this fic to be entered into the curriculum of any aspiring Sherlock BBC fanfic reader. For take almost all the characters of the series, add a few pounds of Dickens, some pints of Wilkie Collins, a heavy dollop of the Bronte sisters, a tablespoon of Austen, and a pinch of ACD storylines, stir the whole concoction according to the instructions of Charles Palliser and Sarah Waters and you’ll end up with this great shaggy beast of a wonderfully precocious fic that combines massive scope with minute detail and serves it all up in a plot so thick the spoon stands up in it.
The story is set in the Victorian era and the period is both lovingly and convincingly drawn in beautiful, luxurious language reminiscent of the nineteenth century. We’re taken on a tour of Victorian society, from the hovels of the poor through the lush and unspoiled countryside around Sherrinford Hall, home of the Earl of Sherrinford and his children Mycroft and Sherlock, to the stables, where John, the new groom serves under the loving eye of Mr and Mrs Gregson, and on to the servant’s quarters to the grand chambers of the Hall itself.
Told from John’s POV Sherlock and he are but children when they first meet. John’s career as a jockey was nipped in the bud by an accident and he’s been sent by his former employer to Sherrinford Hall. There he strikes up a fast friendship with the youngest son of the Earl, the quick-witted and sharp-tempered Sherlock, against whose temperament he has been warned.
All seems well with the world while John and Sherlock enjoy their summer of friendship. But of course all good things must come to an end. The scene is laid for an elaboration of their friendship through correspondence until the next summer, the last before Sherlock will have to go to Eton.
At that moment the first angst starts to seep into the fic. Sherlock doesn’t write and John fears for their friendship, and worse, until Sherlock shows up unexpectedly one stormy night and John gets his first inkling the world outside even for an Earl’s son the world outside Sherrinford Hall might be a bit more fraught with peril than he had assumed.
Then the shocking developments start happening so fast and so relentlessly, their whole world torn asunder while they’re confronted with every atrocity mankind ever invented that the reader is left hanging in the ropes like an exhausted boxer, and yet thirsting for more. Truly, the phrase ‘unputdownable’ must have been coined with this fic in mind.
As we follow Sherlock and John on their journey we meet hundreds of characters. The characters from the series are of course designed to various positions in life in a totally different setting and yet they remain IC throughout, no mean feat. All of the OC’s, and we meet lots and lots of those, are well-rounded and lovingly drawn. As this is a Victorian novel there is a lot of sickness and death and outrageous treatment of innocents and the reader becomes invested in what happens to the OC’s almost as much as what happens to John and Sherlock and Mycroft and Irene and Mike Stamford and Molly and Angelo and… need I go on?
Honestly, I could go on and on and on about this fic, but in the end, to quote a certain consulting criminal, “I would try to convince you but… everything I have to say has already crossed your mind!”
For I do hope to have convinced you to go and read this right now. You truly won’t regret it that you did.

Title: Child Sherlock and John--Inventing!
Artist: [livejournal.com profile] pennies_4_eyes

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Here is an artfill for THIS prompt over at the Sherlock!BBC kink meme.

I wanted to capture them with a difference in age, John the older. So here we have a determined, focused Sherlock at age 7 (or so) with an older John watching out for him, first aid kit at the ready. They're in the attic at Sherlock's house where he has commandeered an old dressmaker's form to mount his (rather steampunk) flying machine on. THis was SO fun that I may do more from this headverse.

Poor Sherlock is a bit consternated, looking over his blueprint diagram. That's a screwdriver in his hand. I know. It's hard to tell.

Reccer's comments: Pennies-4-Eyes does outstanding adult!Sherlock/Holmes and John/Watson, so it's lovely to see how charming her child versions of John and Sherlock are. Both look like children (face and body-wise), adorable without being overly cute. The nods to their clothing on the series is a wonderful touch: John wearing an oatmeal sweater with a buttondown shirt, Sherlock in a white dress shirt, dark shorts, and loafers that suggest the attire of his adulthood.

Sherlock trying to invent mechanical wings touches on his twin devotions to science and adventure. The dangers in this project are hinted at with the plasters on his knee, elbow, and cheek, as well as the bandages wrapped around his wrist and fingers. The placement of John's first aid kit nearby, where he can swiftly render medical assistance, shows us that John knows his expertise will be needed again.

Sherlock's intent expression speaks of frustration as well as determination (somehow he will make those metal wings work!). John's face is calm but alert; I can believe he is ready for almost anything: mending Sherlock, or helping him get his creation off the ground, so to speak. Encapsulated in this image from an AU 'verse are their roles in canon: Sherlock completely dedicated to his Work to the detriment of his Transport and John the Healer and fellow Adventurer, believing that Sherlock will solve any problem before him.

Author's summary: [note: none given, so this is mine] John Watson, recently invalided from Afghanistan, finds his usual nightmare interrupted by a mysterious figure. When he stops dreaming altogether, John tries to get his dreams back, running headlong into an adventure that changes his life forever.

Reccer's comments: NavyDream demonstrates that BBC's Sherlock and Neil Gaiman's graphic novel series The Sandman work beautifully together. John and Sherlock are the primary focus, but Irene, Henry, Molly, and Lestrade are engaging minor characters. I'm not sure I should say much about which characters play which roles in this fusion to avoid spoilers, but I will share that John is a human being, whereas Sherlock is Morpheus.

ND clearly has experience with layout conventions of comics and manga, for rather than sticking only with a series of square panels, which could get monotonous, they play with panel numbers, shapes, and sizes in a way that supports the energy and dynamism of the twisty plot. Perspective and framing and other artistic elements further underline the mood and action of the narrative.

One pleasure of following this work over the months it was posted was watching the artist's skill and confidence grow. Some minor errors in grammar made it into the script, but I feel ND did fine for someone whose first language is not English. I look forward to seeing the artist apply what they learned in their new Sherlock/Dr. Who crossover comic!

Note: Despite the major character death warning, I want to assure you that this does have a resoundingly happy ending for the main characters.
