Title: In Between
Author: illwick
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: 40k words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Drug use, internalized homophobia
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: They've always been there. They always will.

Reccer's comments: This was originally posted as a series – seven individual short stories that, together, form a devastating and emotionally resonant larger picture of two people wholly and completely in love with one another and yet unable (or unwilling) to ever acknowledge that fact out loud.

It begins with Lestrade, at Baker Street to check up on Sherlock following John and Mary's wedding, inadvertently discovering something he was never meant to know—that John and Sherlock had been involved in a sexual relationship prior to Sherlock's death.

This story manages to remain canon-compliant even while providing John and Sherlock with this history. We are given glimpses of their relationship over time through both John and Sherlock's eyes, as they each struggle with the memories of what they had, the pain of what they have lost, their denial and desperate attempts at self-preservation and deflection as they each try to push aside the past and move forward with an uncertain future.

There is a happy ending, eventually, that does not shrug off the weight of all that has happened between them.

But now, here in front of him, in lilac-hued technicolor, is proof that this was not a happy ending. John Watson now lives with his wife in suburbs, and Sherlock Holmes is alone in his empty flat on Baker Street analyzing soil samples and shooting up. And Greg is trying not to think about how Sherlock must have felt three weeks ago, standing beside his former lover and giving a speech at his wedding.

The stories jump back and forth in time but should be read in order, beginning with The Day Before.

Title: All In
Author: thesignsofserbia
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 8,139 words
Rating: Teen
Warnings: Violence, references to past torture
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: There are moments in life where time stops, and all you can feel is one singular point of terror. It’s instant nausea, it’s the breath stuttering in your chest, every organ dropping, the ice crystallising down your spine. It’s that one thought that eclipses all else, that one feeling, that one, two letter word.

Reccer's comments: This painful, haunting fic explores an alternate take on Sherlock's return post-Reichenbach—he is badly damaged by the things he has seen and done, and his natural response is to retreat inward. He reunites with John and the two resume living together at Baker Street (there is no Mary in this story).

John tries his best to forgive. Yet it is Sherlock who continues to flounder, the trauma he endured while dismantling Moriarty's web threatening to overwhelm his already poor coping mechanisms at every turn. There is a palpable sense of unease, an understanding that they simply cannot go on like this, until a case goes bad and all of that repressed anger and pain comes to a head in one absolutely devastating emotional moment.

Sherlock does what he’s told, laying out his movements in minute detail; obscure facts, vivid descriptions. He explains everything he saw, heard, and did, without hesitation, as questions become increasingly irrelevant.

They ask, and they ask; what did he hear, what did it sound like? He tells them that when he screamed for death; the note was an A sharp.

This story has a lovely hopeful ending, which is a balm for how much the characters have suffered.

Title: Parhelion
Author: Tripodion
Pairing:  Sherlock/John
Length: 50k words
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Contemplation of suicide, some vampire-typical blood and gore
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: The darkness is coming again, and when you've lived as a member of the undead for over five hundred years together, you know a thing or two about handling it. Forever is a long way to fall.

Reccer's comments: You know how sometimes you read a fic and find yourself with a lump in your throat, choking back a flood of unexpected emotion? This beautiful, heartbreaking fic is one of those, and it had me both weepy and edge-of-my-seat riveted in turns. It's flown under the radar since being posted back near the end of 2017 (less than 100 kudos!), but it's definitely worth a closer look.

John couldn’t help it – he laughed in his face, a dark, incredulous laugh at the absurdity of what he was hearing. “You’re telling me that after I left you, you seriously contemplated over throwing the human race."

John and Sherlock are vampires, and they have been together for centuries. In a way that feels painfully true to the characters they love each other deeply, but are not always happy. Sherlock is frequently bored and morose, and John finds himself feeling trapped and restless with the need to do something. They spend years together and years apart, with John indulging his wanderlust and desire for action and Sherlock slowly falling to pieces in John's absence and unable to articulate why.

Sherlock finds himself contemplating an out from his seemingly endless cycle of boredom and loneliness, but circumstances conspire to place John in grave danger instead. While desperately trying to save John's life, Sherlock considers all of the years that came before, the hurts large and small that they have dealt one another, and most importantly the strength of the bond between them.

Title: Child's Play
Author: bendingsignpost
Pairing: gen; Sherlock Holmes, John Watson
Length: 4,300 words
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Verse: BBC Sherlock
Author's summary: “You’ve been shopping, but not for groceries. You don’t have much in the way of funds, so something cheap, but not an impulse purchase—you’re much too disciplined for that. Something-” John puts down the plastic bag on the coffee table. A palpable shift occurs in the air. “...You bought a puzzle from a charity shop,” Sherlock states.

Reccer's comments: This is such an idiosyncratic and interesting slice-of-life story about Sherlock and John getting to know each other back in the first few months of their time as flatmates in series 1. At first it seems to be shaping up along similar lines to many stories about John's first impressions of Sherlock, but the introduction of the puzzles (more literal in this case than in most Holmesian fics) spins this tale into an exploration of the joy and awkwardness inherent in two adult people trying to make friends. There is something so real in the way John starts picking apart his own behavior in retrospect, worrying about looking childish or over-eager. John and Sherlock's interactions in this story are sometimes playful, sometimes confusing, sometimes even infuriating, but there is a real sweetness that unfolds as they get better at figuring each other out.

Reccer's Comments: This vid is a charming, sweet tribute to this much-loved Soviet series. The vidder is herself Russian, and the whole sound and look of the piece is overflowing with nostalgia and appreciation. Beautiful!

P.S. - editing this to add: this vid is not tagged or labeled with any descriptors, which is why I did not list it explicitly as romance or slash, but...it seems quite shippy to me :)

Title: Signs and Signals
Author: saki101
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: @9,000 words
Rating: M
Warnings: none
Verse: ACD Holmes
Author's summary: Holmes boxes. Watson wagers. There are exchanges of signals and a case.

Reccer's comments: I have a special love for established relationship stories, where we get the chance to see how two people actually work in their day to day lives after they get together. This story is set in something of the 'honeymoon period' of Holmes and Watson's new relationship, while they are still dizzy with happiness and hungrily passionate with each other. Watson, especially, is searching for some public way to express his pride and elation without endangering them both. He quietly struggles with the niggling sense of insecurity he feels, knowing that the traditional social markers that solidify a recognized, committed relationship can never be theirs. But Holmes and Watson's shared life is as much about their work as it is anything else, and there too we can see the way they match each other and share the delights of discovery. The story follows them as they pursue an unusual jewel thief and uncover a historical mystery. The heart of the story, though, lies in the subtle but essential growth of their own mutual understanding as they find ways of reassuring one another that what they have is meant to last.

Reccer's comments: I recently ran across this artist's awe-inspiring catalogue of BBC Sherlock portraits, varying in style from pencil sketches to digital paintings. The striking realism of the drawings and the way the artist has experimented with different ways of expressing character and mood are amazing. Their pencil sketches offer beautiful close-ups full of nuanced expression, such as these series 1 era portraits of John Watson and Sherlock.

The digital paintings experiment more with light and mood. Check out the drizzly greys of Bored; see how Sherlock's surroundings and his own body blur around the edges while the lurid, cartoonish smiley face on the wall is matched by a squiggly, comic-strip black cloud over Sherlock's own head. And look how the artist plays with stark shadows against an abstract background in this beautiful silhouette of Sherlock.

The artist's tumblr posts are not tagged by fandom so there is a mixture of art on any given page of their blog, but you can find the rest of their Sherlock art on these two pages: here and here. It's all beautiful!

Author's summary: Sherlock has something to prove to John in the romance department.

Reccer's comments: Happy almost-Valentine's Day! This fic is the first one that came to my mind when thinking about this holiday. I love it when Sherlock fails in every way at 'traditional' romance but nevertheless succeeds in being the person that John actually needs. John spends much of the fic in a state of affectionate irritation, but the generally light tone of the story is occasionally pierced through with real flashes of pain, of caring, and of passion. I particularly enjoy the sly note that the author lends to Sherlock's ostensibly 'for science!' approach to courting John. The trope-y romantic mishaps are really entertaining, but beneath all that the story has genuine insight and heart. My favorite scene is the one where they discuss what John's funeral would have been like, and how many romances can you say that about?

Title: No Ordinary Cats
Author: philalethia
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 8,700 words
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Mrs Hudson adopts a cat called Sherlock, who soon becomes bored being an only cat. So she tries to find a friend for him. Silly little AU in which Sherlock and John (and Mycroft) are cats.

Reccer's comments: The author's summary makes this sound like an adorable piece of fluff (literally!), and to a large extent it is. Light and charming, it always brings a smile to my face. But ironically, given the fic's title, what I most enjoy about it is the loving detail with which it portrays Sherlock and John as thoroughly ordinary cats. This fic was clearly written by someone who loves the animals and has a fond, familiar eye for their behaviours, postures, temperaments and mannerisms. Translating Sherlock and John's personalities into the animal world has often been done, but I've rarely seen a version in which they remain simultaneously so recognizable and so genuinely feline. Mrs Hudson's irritated adoration with her beloved but occasionally awful tenants translates perfectly into cat ownership :)

Every time I read this story, I am surprised at how easily it engages me and how utterly sold I am on the details and descriptions.

Reccer's comments: This gorgeous, painful, tender, nakedly honest fic goes AU after Series 3 and does an amazing job dealing with grief and reconciliation and the passage of time. Mrs Hudson's final wish is for Sherlock not to be alone, and that's what this story does, very slowly and very carefully, with realism and respect regarding just how much healing and emotional growth Sherlock and John have to do for that to happen. The lovely ending is long-awaited and well-earned.

Reccer's comments: I can't believe I'd never seen this fic before, but it's a charming, very well-written fake-relationship story set at Christmas, with an excellent writer!John. Its funny, involving antagonism-to-romance setup reminded me of the classic rom-coms, but it has an effervescence all its own.

Author's summary: John kind of can’t believe he’s doing this and kind of can’t imagine doing anything else. He dips his head, heart pounding.

Reccer's comments: This fantastic alternate first meeting fic starts off with one of my new favorite iterations of the Fake Relationship trope and then continues on to a delightful comedy of errors, with great banter, believable bumbling, and a very satisfying ending. This reminded me of the early glory days of the show; there's a sense of unfettered joy about it that's really wonderful.

Reccer's comments: This wonderful Ritchie-verse first meeting fic deserves a lot more attention. Its characterization is phenomenal, to the point that this immediately became my head canon for the movies as soon as I read it. It's funny and warm and affectionate and all-around delightful, with a fantastic Stamford as a bonus. This feels like the definitive treatment of Jude Law's Watson to me, and this lovely fic is like being invited into his friendship with Holmes.

Verse: ACD
Author's summary: I picked up my drink and took a small sip, allowing the smoky liquid to burn at the back of my throat before swallowing it down. Heat blossomed in my stomach, the sensation perfectly in harmony with my feelings in that moment: warm, bright, hovering indecisively between calm contentment and a headier, more restless euphoria. My eyes traveled from the day’s paper to the man who sat beside me, reading and re-reading a letter, unaware that his presence was the source of my continued and consuming joy.

Watson feels deeply for Holmes, but what it is he feels is less than clear.

Reccer's comments: This is such a lovely and believable character piece, with Watson realizing that his feelings for Holmes go beyond just admiration. It's one of the best fics in that vein I've read, and the emotions and pacing are dead-on. The whole thing feels tender and true, and it's stuck with me ever since I read it.

Length: 30,234 words

Author's summary: There had been years of missed chances.

Reccer's comments: This is such an amazing, sometimes painful, but ultimately happy slow burn that really dives into the miscommunications and stifled longing between Sherlock and John. It's beautifully written, and every emotional beat feels earned. It regularly had me on the edge of my seat, or choking up, living the emotions right along with the characters. The psychological depth and love for the characters are fantastic, and the many close calls before the final resolution are exquisite torture. I strongly suspect that this will become a new Christmas classic in fandom.

Verse: A Study in Emerald
Author's summary: It all began because of the woman.

Reccer's comments: For me, one of the most positive aspects of fanfiction is sometimes getting to see things through other people’s eyes—understanding their pleasures even when I don’t share them myself. For example: I’m not a fan of dark stuff, I’m not a fan of Moriarty, I’m not a Holmes/Moriarty shipper, I’m not even a fan of examining their relationship in a non-sexual and non-romantic sense. And yet… I am a fan of [personal profile] trobadora’s Holmes and Moriarty fics.

This is a compelling and beautifully written twist on A Scandal in Bohemia, building on and developing A Study in Emerald’s world and characters. The author perfectly captures Moran’s narrative voice, giving us such an air of dread throughout, and skilfully explores his relationship with Moriarty. The story also examines Moriarty’s ambiguous relationship with ‘Vernet’, as the two men cross paths over the case and the line between enemy and collaborator becomes increasingly blurred.

N.B. I have chosen to put ‘N/A’ under warnings because I don’t think any of the comm’s obligatory warnings strictly apply. But please bear in mind that the author has used ‘Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings’ and the ‘Mature’ rating on AO3. Disturbing things happen ‘offscreen’ in the story’s past and present, and a disturbing thing that is going to happen in the future is referred to.

Length: 4,330 words
Rating: G
Warnings: N/A
Verse: ACD
Author's summary: Being the record of a single, chance encounter that offered me a glimpse into my own heart and that of Sherlock Holmes

Reccer's comments: Whether you ship H/W or see them as friends, I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling frustration with what ACD chooses to do with Holmes and Watson’s relationship in the last portion of their timeline. Watson abruptly moves out of Baker Street, a second Mrs. Watson is mentioned in passing with no further information given, Holmes retires to Sussex, he and Watson drift apart almost entirely. And I am sure there have been many, many fix-its written for this.

This is an unusual kind of fix-it, however. For this fic the author accepts the canon version of events as being true. But then goes on to expand on them and give them a psychological depth—looking at Watson’s state of mind as he comes to the startling realisation he’s ready to marry again after Mary, and also examining the love between two life-long friends.

The story has a poignancy of course—as Watson says, leaving Holmes would mark the end of something larger than either of us. But it’s oddly uplifting too—we are left with an intense awareness of the affection between Holmes and Watson, and the knowledge that the bond between them will always be there.

Title: A Christmas Carol
Author: Mottlemoth
Pairing: Mycroft/Lestrade, Sherlock/John
Length: 40,385 words
Rating: Teen
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC/A Christmas Carol

Author's summary: "All lives end... all hearts are broken."

Mycroft Holmes never needed a reason to loathe Christmas - but getting dumped by the love of his life certainly did the trick. It's been a year since Mycroft lost the man he adored, and with Christmas Eve fast approaching, he's counting down the hours until all this festive lunacy is over.

Sadly for Mycroft, fate has other plans.

It's going to take three ghosts to show him the error of his ways. But can he make amends in time? Or will he prove to himself, once and for all, that caring is not an advantage?

Reccer's comments: It's a Mystrade Christmas Carol! Yes, maybe you think the premise is tired and unoriginal but I urge you to think again. The author puts their own unique twists on the tale, and I promise that you won't be bored. You might suffer from emotional whiplash, though, because this fic is in turns funny, heartbreaking, heartwarming, exasperating, tearjerking... and last but not least, joyful and life-affirming. Just like the Dickens tale.

And never fear, Johnlock fans. This story may center around the Mycroft/Lestrade relationship, but even though Sherlock/John is background, their presence is keenly felt throughout. I especially liked Sherlock's relationship with Greg in this, as well as his interactions with his brother. A more human Sherlock you'll never meet!

Grab your hot cocoa, a comfy blanket, and settle in for a whopper of a ghost story.

Title: The Last Companion
Author: standbygo
Pairing: Sherlock/John, Sherlock/OMCs, Sherlock/OFCs
Length: 34,075 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Discussions of non-con because Moriarty is creepy
Verse: Sherlock BBC/Firefly

Author's summary: Thirty years after the Miranda Wars, there is peace, both on the Rim and the Core planets. There are a number of old social mores still in place, such as the Order of Companions, but there is a sense that even such respected practices are coming to an end…

Sherlock is a Companion - the best Companion on Persephone. With a bit of detective work on the side, of course. Then he meets a man named John Watson, encounters a series of bizarre cases, and finds his world is getting turned upside down.

Reccer's comments: All of this author’s Sherlock fics are well worth the read, but I chose this one because of the unique fusion with Firefly, a sci-fi television show. I myself wasn’t that familiar with the world of Firefly, and I don’t think knowledge of that world is necessary to enjoy this story to the fullest. The writing is such that any necessary background information is seamlessly woven into the narrative.

In this universe, Sherlock has been groomed from childhood to become a Companion, and in adulthood he has become one of the most sought-after ones. A Companion, to put it delicately, is a paid escort. But Companions have been trained not only in the art of pleasure and seduction, but they are some of the most educated and talented people on the planet. They are paid not only for providing sexual intimacy, but almost anything else that the client may crave as well. And Sherlock’s skills at deduction ensure that the clients always come away satisfied.

Of course being a Companion is not Sherlock’s only vocation. He also does detective work on the side. In the middle of one of his investigations, he is rescued by a stranger going by the name of John Watson. Of course, the two of them get caught up in a case, become fascinated with each other, go dancing, fall in love -- and it almost all comes crashing down due to the machinations of one James Moriarty.

Reccer's comments: This is, guaranteed, the least angsty Post-Reichenbach fic you'll ever read. Lighthearted, cracky, and Halloween themed, this short ficlet is a delight from beginning to end.

John is a witch doctor who runs a candle shop. Anyone who has worked retail will relate to his harried interactions with his customers, some more polite than others. Then a tall, handsome stranger saunters into the shop, and John forgets about everything else. Because there's something about this stranger -- or is he really a "stranger" at all?
