Title:Coffee
Author: [livejournal.com profile] fengirl88
Pairing: Sherlock/Lestrade
Length: 221 words
Rating: PG-13
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: He doesn't like breakfast, but this is perfect.

Reccer's comments: I. LOVE. 221B*. FICLETS. I love basically any kitchy fandom-specifc drabble-type fic, really, especially when they're done as well as this one is. Actually, I'm pretty sure this was my gateway drug to shipping S/L :) For such a short-format story, this seems really...I guess expansive is the word.

(*221b ficlets, for those unfamiliar with the format, are short fics, 221 words, last word beginning with the letter b.)

Today begins our series of monthly open rec days* on a specific theme, open to all posters.

This time, we want your recs for works that represent the point of view of Sherlock Holmes--entire works, not those that only include Sherlock among several POVs. Tell us about something that stuck in your mind or struck you as noteworthy: a genuine, bizarre, unusual, cracky, touching, enlightening view or voice of the fandom's main character.

>The facts:
Make your recs today, August 24. The comm will be open today to all posters for recs on the above theme--if it's Wednesday where you live, the comm should be open for your post (doing our best!).
Fic, art, and vids may be recced. All versions of Sherlock Holmes sources are eligible for recs. Recent WIPs or RPF for actors or crew in the various series are not eligible.
Previously recced works are eligible.
Please follow the recs guidelines. One rec per post, please, unless you're reccing a series.
Please tag your posts with at least the minimum tags required (verse, slash/gen/het genre, and pairing if relevent) plus "theme: sherlock pov".

If you have any questions, please ask in comments to this post or in PM to a mod.

Thanks so much! We're looking forward to your recs.

*Discussed previously here.

Title: Devil’s Calling
Author: [livejournal.com profile] janeturenne
Pairing: Watson/Mary, Holmes/Watson
Length: 3600 words
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: mild naughty words, not very graphic violence
Verse: ACD books
Author's summary: "For a very short time, I stopped hoping altogether, and that, in the way of the world, is when his ignorance came to its end."
Reccer's comments: As [livejournal.com profile] janeturenne says, every slasher sooner or later takes on adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton. At her one year anniversary of posting her first Holmes fic, she contributed this story, which takes on the exquisitely angsty problem of “what to do about Mary?” in a way that respects Watson’s love of his wife, and still recognizes all of the ways that he and Holmes are completely entangled.

Janeturenne is one of the best wordsmiths who has ever graced Holmes fandom. She gives me credit as a beta, but to tell the truth, I only took on that role to be able to glom onto her creations earlier than most. Her Holmes-voice in this is wonderful, both brilliant and in places shining dark as he sets out to make Watson know what he has always known.

Title: Five Times Sherlock Listened to John’s Heartbeat and One Time John Listened to Sherlock’s

Author: [livejournal.com profile] thirdbird

Pairing: John/Sherlock

Length: 2500

Rating: T

Warnings: none

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Sherlock is obsessed with John's heartbeat.

Reccer's comments: This was one of the first stories I ever read in fandom and it was a wonderful one to come across as a newbie to fandom. I adore stories from Sherlock's POV (though I'm finding that there are fewer than I realized). His quirky way of seeing the world along with his intensity (and intense focus) on what matters to him are illustrated powerfully in this 5 +1 style story. In a relatively short space, the author shows us John and Sherlock's relationship on so many levels. And, of course, the central conceit, that Sherlock does (of course) have a heart (same as John) is both poignantly felt and gorgeously shown. Beautifully written, too.

Title: The Pleasure Dome Hotel
Authors: [livejournal.com profile] raiining & [livejournal.com profile] velvet_mace
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: ~16 k
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: bdsm related violence
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Sex had little interest to Sherlock until a case of murder and espionage leads Sherlock to find a very interesting sub.
Reccer's comments: If you're a fan of D/s dynamics this is definitely a must read. A very clever and well-written AU that twists John's and Sherlock's relationship, yet changes little of the characters themselves. The (really, really hot) sex is undoubtedly the main feature of the story, but there's a really great case fic mixed up in it, so this is far from a simple PWP.

Title: Moments of Loss
Author: [livejournal.com profile] livia_carica
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: 690
Rating:PG-13
Warnings: Depiction of the beginnings of senility.
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Sherlock is gradually losing John.
Reccer's comments: I've been really loving retirement-era fics recently, and this little heartbreaker is a vivid one. The loving details make this scene very easy to picture. Though short, it packs a punch with its depiction of Sherlock's care for John. Bring a hanky.

Title: I Used to Live Alone Before I Knew You
Author: [livejournal.com profile] etothepii
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 11,000
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Where Mycroft is an angel, Sherlock is a demon, and John is still John.
Reccer's comments: Sherlock is dark here in a very different way, because although he is, yes, technically evil, he’s also a fallen angel, and remembers what love feels like. Sherlock’s slow re-assessment of his worldview as a result of John’s presence in his life is glorious to watch, and you’ll be cheering for them both. Although this is technically a Good Omens fusion, I didn’t know that until after reading, and it hindered my enjoyment of the story not a jot. There’s also related fanart.

Title: The Science of Circumvention
Author: lusus_scientiae
Pairing: Sherlock and John
Length: about 3100 words
Rating: R I guess
Warnings: spoiler: character death
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Spins a different ending for 'The Great Game'
Reccer's comments:

This story contains disturbing images and descriptions of drug and alcohol abuse.
It's an uncomfortable and gripping view of Sherlock after the pool, viewing himself, viewing John, in a deteriorating state.

Sherlock's an endlessly fascinating character to explore and read, most intensely, for me, when we're looking through his eyes. This is horribly good at doing so. I'm glad it's not canon.

Title: The Choice
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ingridmatthews [The entry is anonymous, but on her delicious account it's tagged as her own fic]
Pairing: Gen
Length: ~1,200
Rating: no rating, but maybe PG
Warnings: -
Verse: Ritchie films (I think)
Excerpt: Watson is irrational. Watson is emotional. Watson, damn him to hell, is going to do the only thing that will tear Holmes in half, never to be whole again. Watson's going to break the heart that he himself built, the beating, tender bit of soul that Holmes never wanted to own and now that it's there, Watson's simply going to rip it out and throw it away.

For the first time, Holmes wishes he'd never met John Hamish Watson.

Reccer's comments: A poignant "What if..." scenario fic. Holmes travels back in time to convince himself not to get involved with Watson... Unsurprisingly it doesn't turn out well.
This fic breaks my heart, it really does, but that's part of why I love it.

Title: The Progress of Sherlock Holmes
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ivyblossom
Pairing: Sherlock/John, John/Mary
Length: 62,006
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Sherlock is head over heels for John, but you wouldn't know it by looking at him. First-person present-tense series of short scenes from Sherlock's point of view, borrowing heavily from Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. This is the chaptered version. It exists separately because I really did think I was writing a series for the first several thousand words. But it turned into a chaptered fic, hence, a chaptered version for readability.
Reccer's comments: This was, no question, the very first story I thought of when I heard this month's theme. [livejournal.com profile] ivyblossom captures Sherlock's POV in a way that is brilliant and unique and fascinating and riveting. And the story is heartwrenching and angsty in the most wonderful, glorious ways.

Here's my horrible secret about this story: I am a hoarder of The Last Precious Thing. I will save the last Tim Tam. The last serving of ice cream. The last bottle of special release microbrew. Because there might be a day when I absolutely 100% NEED THAT THING, and if I consume it now, it won't be there later.

I have saved the last chapter of this story for MONTHS so that I have it for that perfect time when I absolutely, desperately need it.

Title: Seeds
Author: thesardine on AO3
Pairing: Gen (Sherlock and John friendship)
Length: 5,493 words
Rating: Teen and Up
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: In a fit of boredom Sherlock plants some seeds, may or may not eat one cracker, and definitely waxes dramatic on the sofa for a while.

Reccer's comments: I've already recced this on my journal, and may repeat a few things from there. Mainly, this fic belongs with today's theme because it relates Sherlock's experience with his ups and downs not as description, but as lived experience. The effect is that Sherlock is an unreliable narrator who inspires, from me at least, profound sympathy. The author has an admirably light touch--nothing dramatic; the focus is on the mundane and how Sherlock experiences his life between adventures. There's no melodrama or bathos here, which I want to stress because the lack of those things lends the story power. Clearly, the story contains some psychological insights that moved me, but also, Sherlock's interactions with John make this also a story about friendship, the kind that persists even in the face of strange behavior and anti-sociality. (I think I made that word up.) It's not often that I reread a story, but this one stands among the proud few. I hope some of you guys will read it too and leave the author some comments. :)

Title: The Top Secret Live Journal of Sherlock Holmes

Author: [livejournal.com profile] woe_in_a_hoodie

Pairing: John/Sherlock, John/Lestrade, Sherlock/Lestrade, John/Sherlock/Lestrade

Length: not sure... very long, though, thank goodness :)

Rating: R-NC-17 depending on the chapter

Warnings: Cursing everywhere, sexual content, 4chan makes an appearance, a tiny flash of incest due to Rule 34, drug use (nicotine patches), and 'Real People Slash' in that in this universe, Sherlock has an RPS fandom that follows his site and John's blog.
Notes: THIS FIC IS PURPOSEFULLY ABSURD. (Thought you ought to know.) Much love to Louise Rennison, author of the Confessions of Georgia Nicholson series of novels, which are the main inspiration for this work.

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Sherlock has a Livejournal, which he updates constantly via his mobile phone and netbook. Everyone offline thinks that he's this stoic super-genius, when in reality he's a bonkers super-genius.

Reccer's comments: Warning. Don't read this fic in the presence of children or anybody who you don't want reading over your shoulder and asking, "WHAT on EARTH is so incredibly FUNNY?" Seriously. You don't want to have to explain cock spats to an 11 year old. Really, you don't. (For the record, I didn't mention cock spats to my 11 year old, in case you were worried. I did however have to stop reading the story b/c I couldn't stop laughing and he wasn't going to let that go without explanation.)

This is one of the funniest, zaniest, laugh-out-loud, cleverest stories I've read in fandom. It's cleverly done and Sherlock's voice is spot on and, at the same time, skewed just that tiny bit off so that he's absolutely, undoubtedly insane. In a good way.

When you need a pick me up, read this story. You'll laugh so hard, you'll cry.

Title: Cu Sylvatica

Author: [livejournal.com profile] sprl1199

Pairing: Sherlock/John

Length: 35,096

Rating: R

Warnings: none

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: He wonders if this is the tipping point: that moment that everyone seems to be so certain will someday occur when he tosses off whatever exists of his threadbare sense of ethics to live life entirely at the whim of what is interesting and what is not.

He wishes the concept didn't appeal to him so strongly.

Reccer's comments: As evidenced by its presence in the community tags, there have been many fics that explore Sherlock's professed sociopathy. This is my favorite, not only because the case involved is engaging, but because Sherlock really, truly wrestles with the label, at times quailing under everyone's expectations of how he'll behave. He accumulates the data from everyone, and sprl1199 handles his self-analysis wonderfully.

Title: Surfacing

Author: [livejournal.com profile] machshefa

Pairing: Sherlock/John

Length: 3,567

Rating: Mature

Warnings: none

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: He’s here. Of course he is. He can no more stay away than can I.

But my vision blurs, and I know this must be a dream because I’ve come for Moriarty, but it’s John who steps out to greet me.

Reccer's comments: This story is exceptional in relaying, not only Sherlock's unique POV, but what happens when Sherlock's perceptions are tampered with, what happens when things muddle together in his mind. It is gorgeous in its imagery and the details that Machshefa weaves in so very subtly are just stunning.

Title: Brought to You By...
Author: [livejournal.com profile] in_the_bottle
Pairing: Sherlock and John, friendship; Sherlock/OMC
Length: 8200+ words
Rating: PG
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: There are some things John didn't need to know (but do), and Sherlock finally learned that there are some things he is content with not knowing.
Reccer's comments:
Oh, I like this one. This is a look at the lyrical clockwork of Sherlock's mind. He experiences synaesthesia, "seeing sound and and hearing colours," and tumbling words and letters, significant letters, as clues and markers. This is, in part, also a casefic, which moves between now and then and then & then. It's clever and deft and I grinned like a maniac, reading it.
