Pairing: John/Sherlock, OFC/OFC are the main pairings
Length: 119,503

Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Ireland, 1920. There's a war on, but no one seems to be playing by the rules. John Watson, injured and unemployed after his time at the Front, joins up with the special forces sent over to keep the peace, but when he meets Sherlock Holmes, the second son of the local lord, he begins to lose track of which side he is on.

Reccer's comments: True history AUs are rare indeed in any fandom, primarily because it takes so much research and practice to richly communicate a complex foreign culture and tell a good fictional story. Most history AUs require years of research to get to the point where the author can adroitly share the cultural and social realities of the peoples living in the past. Therefore, it's no surprise that most authors find it already challenge enough to skillfully create a genre AU like a Western. It's frankly a miracle that this fandom has been blessed with more than one history AU, let alone more than one that is as beautifully wrought as this one.

That lbmisscharlie loves 20th-century Irish and British history is made abundantly clear from the first chapter. John Watson, soldier of King and Country, is not patrolling Afghanistan, but another restive part of the British Empire, Ireland, just as England's grip is slipping. Although BBC!John never has reservations about his deployment to Afghanistan or what he did there, the John of this story will grow to question what he does in Ireland. Without slipping into overt preachiness, the author makes vivid the cultural clashes and how the characters choose to navigate them. Both sides commit atrocities, leaving one wondering who really is in the right.

John and the other canonical characters like Sherlock and Molly are deftly smoothed into their AU roles. For the most part, the political, social, and cultural beliefs and values they express and act on as English and Irish of the 1920s are blended skillfully with the traits of the BBC characters. Alterations to characters are made purposefully. For example, John is a not an officer or doctor in this fic, something that allows the author to play with class differences in England and in Ireland. Him not being a doctor is, more than once, subtly presented as a lack; something John could be, but never had the opportunity given his social class (several rungs below ACD's Watson for sure and maybe below BBC!John as well).

Of the many OCs, Eva stands out. Both Eva and Molly demonstrate the challenges of women living in Ireland during the troubles of the 1920s. They might support Irish independence, but the violence is personally painful, compelling them to look or hope for alternatives to the high costs of war. These women might risk themselves for Sherlock at different moments of the plot, but it is clear they have lives and concerns outside of Sherlock's Work.

Apart from the layered portrayals of major and minor characters, there is the vibrant sense of place throughout. From the bloody fields of the Continent near the end of WWI, to London and many locations in Ireland (primarily in and around Macroom), the scenery is beautifully rendered, often amplifying the mood of a particular scene. One of many examples is a cinematic rendering of the interior of the Honan Chapel on the grounds of University College in Cork, a setting that conveys the menace and mystery of what is facing John, before suddenly inspiring a brief moment of wonder and nostalgia:

Scrubbing his hands through his hair, John looks around the small chapel once more. The weak candlelight barely penetrates the dark corners, its flickering light producing strange, monstrous shadows in the lurking depths. Bracing one hand on the pew, John hauls himself to his feet and makes his way to the wall. Thrusting the taper in front of him, he traces the walls with his hand as he surveys the perimeter, noting anything that could be used as a weapon: this heavy candelabra, that bible stand, the blunt granite edge of the font. The altar is bare but for an embroidered altar cloth; underneath is empty.

From the altar, John walks down the steps back into the nave, testing the stability of the pews as he passes down the centre aisle. Dead ahead, St Patrick in his emerald robes offers a benediction, while down each side of the nave saints less familiar pass judgement. Pausing in the middle of the aisle, his eye is captured by a brilliant column of blue, its deep tones blending to amethyst in the fading light, which leads to an imperious face with a sharp, beaked nose. But for the long mass of crimson curls, the face, with the haughty set of its eyes and the thrusting, stubborn chin, could be familiar. Some forgotten ancestor of Sherlock’s, perhaps? Amused, John steps closer, craning his neck to examine the details, when his eye focuses and he frowns.

Surrounding the figure, at feet and head, are sparkling, crimson bees, their wingspan the breadth of a man’s spread palm. In one hand, the figure holds a miniature of the chapel, formed from golden beeswax, and John is startlingly thrown back to the summer. To Sherlock’s outstretched thumb, coated in honey, to his caring hands on the hives. John’s laugh, when it breaks the silence, is hoarse, peculiar and cracked. Beekeepers, watching him.

I could go on and on about the many virtues of this lovingly crafted fic, but I urge you to see for yourself!

Author's summary: Missing series of scenes from A Scandal in Belgravia. How does Sherlock actually escape from the Karachi insurgents himself, and what happens when an adrenaline-filled Sherlock finds Irene waiting for him in his hotel room right after his audacious rescue?

Reccer's comments: How does Sherlock actually feel about Irene? We never really find out, do we? Though lots of people far cleverer than I have argued very convincingly in the end he’s not interested in her at all.

This author, however, takes whatever it was between them very seriously and boy, does she add to it to build a most convincing case for some thrilling adlock. Thrilling indeed, for this fic is a glorious ride, as well as a beautifully detailed character study, and an all-consuming romance with some lovely loving porn to top it all off.

Irene is every bit as enigmatic, apparently fickle and unreadable as she is in that wonderful episode and Sherlock, though fighting for his mental equilibrium and trying to give her as good as he gets, is hopelessly lost when she pulls open her full bag of tricks. But perhaps he should just trust her and accept that she’s fallen as hard for him as he has for her?

A beautiful study of two people falling in love, and both too proud to admit it, even to themselves.

Author's summary: Sherlock leant forward, his long fingers curving round to grip John’s.
“I won’t let him win,” he said, eyes hard. “I will do whatever it takes to get you out.”

Reccer's comments: This story is a very clever twist on TRF, every bit as fast-paced and thrilling as that glorious episode. After a gruelling intro it all begins innocently enough with Sherlock whisking off to Las Vegas where Mrs Hudson has been arrested for murder. It’s the first loose brick and in no time at all the whole life Sherlock has so carefully built for himself comes crashing down around him, with Lestrade suspended, John dead and Mycroft as usual being no help at all.

I really can’t tell you any more for that would reveal too much of the incredibly crafty and clever plot. This fic is part casefic, part thriller and part psychological character study, brimming with angst and emotions and agonising choices and decisions. It will have you biting your nails and desperately reading on even though there are probably a thousand other things you should be doing. Should be, yes… but reading this is so much more rewarding.

Title: The Queen of Gondal Series
Author: AJHall
Pairings: SH/JW, SH/OFC, JW/OFC, Mycroft/OFC, Lestrade/Donovan, Lestrade/OFC
Length: approx. 204,000 words
Rating: from teenage to explicit
Warnings: see below
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: The dying King of Gondal lays a solemn trust on John Watson, court physician; at all costs to keep the fourteen year-old Crown Princess Charis out of the clutches of the corrupt Heir of Gondal. Which means arranging her marriage to Sherlock, heir to the neighbouring throne of Gaaldine, Gondal's traditional enemy. John escorts the Crown Princess to her wedding, acutely aware of the pressure of history and unspoken - unspeakable - secrets which he had thought buried forever.

AJHall’s introduction to the series: This is a quasi-historical AU of the BBC Sherlock series set (more or less) in three fantasy kingdoms devised by the Bronte children.
The time period is roughly the late seventeenth century and readers should bear in mind that this saga contains the doings of a set of supremely dysfunctional more-or-less European Royal families steeped in the "divine right of kings" ideology of monarchy, filtered through an early nineteenth century Romantic/Gothick sensibility and then depicted using the freedom of expression afforded by the early twenty-first century internet.
Furthermore, if the Greek myths contemplated it, some member of the Royal houses of Gondal, Angria or Gaaldine has probably put it into practice somewhere.

Reccer's comments: One of the perpetual mysteries of the Sherlock fandom, and one I fear even the world’s only consulting detective will never be able to solve, is this series lack of recognition and applause. For this series contains everything to lift a girl’s heart and have her enthralled for days on end.

Imagine a swashbuckling, dashingly attractive Crown Prince who’s too clever for his own good and eternally testing the patience of his brother, the brooding crafty King who has to slalom between his Council and the eternal threat for war. Add an ever patient, loving battle-hardened doctor who has sworn to obey his liege lord even though doing so nearly breaks his heart.

Is that enough romance for you? Then take treason, double-dealing, life at court, grandiosity, magnificent balls, conspiring abbesses, golden-hearted whores, gossipy and cunning landladies, murder and mayhem, loyalty to the death and every trick the human heart is capable of and you’ll have an inkling of the contents of the fic for starters.

And the language! Oh my god, the wildly imaginative language that soars like the wild peaks of the mountains that separate the rival Kingdoms, speaks the flattering language of court officials, and is so wholly IC when dealing with the series' main protagonists. There’s humour as well, lots of it, both in the situations depicted and in the telling.

To round it all off all the OCs are just perfect, from the Crown Princess Charis herself to her mother Felicia (my favourite OC by far) and the lovely woman on whose breast King Mycroft can lay his weary head at night. The story is told from various POVs throughout, both Sherlock’s and John’s, as well as from that whole host of OCs who serve to shed new light on the characters we know so well.

What more can I say to make you sit down and start reading this? Perhaps you should just do so. You won’t regret it, I’m sure. Not one little bit.

Author's summary: John's lost wallet leads to a case of mistaken identity and the uncovering of a convoluted plot by Sherlock that has ramifications for Mycroft and the British government.

Reccer's comments: Another knighthood in the bag for Sherlock and in this truly clever casefic it is delivered right on his doorstep in the person of a truly hilarious, lovingly created OC.

A clever casefic is always a treat and this is one of the best. It all begins innocently enough with a bit of B&E, a pastime Sherlock is not above indulging in himself when necessity demands it, and quickly evolves, thanks to John’s lost wallet and a horrific train accident, into an episode where an enterprising member of the criminal class saves the day for Mycroft and, through him, perhaps England itself.

Told from three different POV’s the story switches incredibly quickly from humour to some severe angst and back again. Both John’s and Sherlock’s voices are perfect and Jonno Wilson, the burglar OC, is a delight from first to last.

The language is a marvel of inventiveness.

Really, I can’t praise this fic high enough.

Reccer's comments: One of my favorite short fics from early prompt meme days, and not on AO3 as far as I can tell.

Sherlock is descended from the Old Ones, and Great-Grandmother wants him to procreate. He's vowed not to, which irritates her. Forcible tentacle incest ensues.

I've been indulgent, because you and your brother have always been my favourites... but no more. If you won't serve me willingly, you will be made to serve.

“No!” Sherlock cried out, but before the word was half out of his mouth, a tentacle, slimy and fat and covered with small pebbled scales, plugged his mouth. He recoiled back, drawing his tongue protectively deep in his mouth and away from it. Then the flavour hit him. Far from being fetid or foul, as he expected, it was sweet and savoury, hideously delicious. Nourishing.

Velvet_mace has a way of keeping up the tension with little twists and foreboding dialogue. This fic makes great use of both Lovecraft and the prompt art, and is delightfully dirty.

(Thanks to the Sherlock rant meme for hunting this down - you're all cocks to me.)

Author's summary: Just because Sherlock stopped, doesn't mean the Work has to. London is John's city now and he will keep it together with stitching, string, his healing, the food off his table, and sometimes the clothes off his back. John Watson keeps going. He's good at that.
Reccer's comments: This story is magnificent. John is crushed by Sherlock’s death, of course he is. But this John Watson scrapes himself together to continue what he can of the Work, interpreted through his own skills set, rather than Sherlock’s. He finds a run-down surgery in need of a GP near Montague Street (yes, that Montague Street -- as John says scorch marks never really do come off a ceiling). It’s the sort of surgery that you can imagine John “I also play the clarinet” Watson thriving in, rather than withering from boredom.

The John Watson in this story is a standout against many post-TRF fics. Don’t get me wrong, I love all varieties of post-TRF fic, but it’s refreshing to read a John Watson who still maintains his steely resolve and who cobbles together what pieces he can and takes care of what Sherlock’s left behind. The cast of original characters in this is also fantastic. The story's primarily through John's point of view, but occasionally we get a glimpse through someone else's eyes, through the network of people he surrounds himself with in this new life.

Author's summary: In the wake of John's divorce, Sherlock tries to cheer him up with a trip to Cornwall.
Adaptation of ACD's The Adventure of the Devil's Foot.
Reccer's comments: FA is one of my favorite fandom authors, so much so that I bid on her in the Help_Syria auction and won! This is the story she wrote for me. Although I would have recced it anyway, I'm just stating full disclosure up front!

The Adventure of the Devil's Foot is one of my favorite canon stories, so I asked FA to write me a Sherlock/John get-together fic, wrapped in a modern retelling of that particular case. I also requested for it to take place post-Return, after John has either been widowed or divorced. The story was written before the airing of Series 3, so it is now an AU.

At any rate, one of the things I like the most about FA's stories is her Sherlock characterization. Her portrayals always resonate with me as very true to how Sherlock would actually behave and speak. He's never too sentimental, nor is he too sociopathic. I see clear evidence in the show of Sherlock caring a great deal for certain people in his life, and this author does a fantastic job of showing that without sacrificing his detached cool exterior.

In canon, it's Sherlock who is convinced to go on holiday to Cornwall for his health. FA flips that premise here by having John be the one who needs a holiday, specifically to recover from the emotional turmoil he experiences after his marriage ends. Sherlock takes it upon himself to arrange for them to stay at the summer cottage that belonged to his parents but was passed down to Mycroft. Of course a bizarre case presents itself while they're there, along with some revelations about Sherlock and Mycroft's family history. The story is told from Sherlock's POV, which I dearly love and which FA does amazingly well. The story is Sherlock/John, but most of the story is pre-slash with a gradual revealing of mutual feelings. It ends on a quiet note, with a hopeful anticipation of where the two of them will go from here. Just so, so lovely, on so many levels.

Title: The Slash Man
Author: Engazed
Pairing: Sherlock&John friendship, Molly/Lestrade
Length: 281455 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Graphic depictions of violence, rape/non-con
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Sequel to Ten Days. After ten days of unspeakable torture at the hands of Sherlock's worst enemies, John Watson has returned to Baker Street to live with a man whose death, no matter how fake, still haunts him. But his recovery is not easy, his friendship with Sherlock is strained, and a dangerous but hidden menace continues to threaten them both.

Reccer's comments: This is an intense, gripping case fic that had me at the edge of my seat throughout. Seeing how it's an epic novel length, that's truly saying something. It's the sequel to another fic that I recced almost two years ago, Ten Days. If you haven't yet read Ten Days and don't want any spoilers for that fic, then stop reading NOW.

This story isn't quite as disturbing as its prequel, since it isn't our favourite doctor being put through the ringer this time. The Slash Man contains more lighthearted, even some humorous, moments to break up the overall dark tone of the story, but it's still gut-wrenchingly powerful.

This story takes place Post-Reichenbach, after Sherlock's return, and goes AU after Series 2. It begins two weeks after the end of Ten Days. You'll most likely need to read that one first to understand what's going on. John is recovering from his traumatic ordeal, residing once again at Baker Street and reunited with the once-dead detective. What sets this fic apart from others of its ilk are two things. One is how the author portrays the consequences of Sherlock's decisions on the supporting characters. It's a perfect example of how the actions of one man can send a ripple effect through numerous lives. John is not the only one with scars. The second is the author's skillful weaving of a tale that is equally plot-driven and character-driven. There are plenty of heartwrenching, emotional scenes, but never at the cost of a well-written, exciting mystery.

Before starting this story, the reader should be aware that it ends with quite the cliffhanger. The third and final part of what is to be a trilogy is in the works, but has not been posted yet. So it all depends on how patient you are for a resolution as to whether you decide to read this now or not.

Again, I can't recommend this one enough. Please do give it a try; I think you'll be glad you did.

Author's summary: Story starts immediately as HLV ends, Sherlock returns to England as all is not well. Neither he or Mycroft is prepared for Moriarty's first move and someone vital to London's Consulting Detective is in the crosshairs.

Reccer's comments: This is the first story in a series, but can be read on its own. It is a wonderful way of tying up the reappearance of Moriarty and gives us a fun, AU look at the Holmes family and their history. Everyone, including the secondary characters, just shine in this. If you like Lestrade, you’ll love him in this. If you like Molly Hooper, she’s wonderfully competent and professional. Anthea turns up and she’s perfect!

The mystery is tightly woven and it is extremely well-written. There is an OC, and I won’t give away their identity, but trust me - it works.

On a minor note, (um, pun wasn't intended) the author includes her music choices for each of the chapters in the author's notes and they're very well-suited to the story.

Author's summary: The British Government accidentally clones Sherlock Holmes. Which brings a baby to 221B Baker Street.

Reccer's comments: Well, this obviously has to have a rec done for it. This is currently the most popular Johnlock fic on AO3 based on kudos. So what makes it so great?

For anyone who doesn't know the story, the premise is that Sherlock has been cloned without his knowledge, and the baby ends up in John and Sherlock's care. What might have been a cracky premise turns out to be one of those fics you just want to crawl into and curl up inside and never leave.

One thing that made this fic attractive to me was the fix-it aspect. Sherlock basically gets to relive his entire childhood - well, babyhood and toddlerhood anyway, which is as far as the story takes us - but this time, everything gets done right. The way he would have wanted it. The way that would have made him happy. And if that wasn't enough to tug on your heartstrings, John is right there being his champion every step of the way, defending all of Sherlock's somewhat unorthodox choices.

Excerpt... )

Then there is the lushly gorgeous relationship development between John and Sherlock. Have you ever seen one of those videos of the dog greeting his master when he comes home from military service? That's how reading every interaction between John and Sherlock in this fic made me feel. Like bursting with happiness at how perfect it is, and maybe a bit choked up.

And of course there is a case. Because where exactly did Sherlock's clone come from in the first place? And... don't those people want him back?

Throughout it all is the astonishing little Oliver, who's both entirely normal and entirely Sherlock, and both John and Sherlock aim to keep him that way.

It's funny, it's heartwarming, it's wistful, it's touching, and most of all it's a feel-good fic of the first order.

Author's summary: “Mr Holmes, I'm not in the habit of approaching . . . consultants. But you are correct. I have great faith in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. And until recently, I also had faith in the rule of law. Only the second one has wavered. Three years ago my fiancé, Sgt. Neil Howie of the West Highlands Constabulary, went to investigate an anonymous report of a missing child in a remote place called Summerisle. He never communicated with me while he was there, and he never returned.” Summerisle is not a welcoming place to visitors, but it shows its best face at May Day. For ulterior motives.

Reccer's comments: Beltane. Bonfires, witches, and human sacrifices. A case takes John and Sherlock to a remote Scottish island where they are completely cut off from the outside world - no wifi, no cell phone reception, no transport off the island... and the inhabitants are all members of a Pagan cult in need of fresh blood - quite literally.

The fic is based on a movie, The Wicker Man, which I haven't seen so I'm not sure how much is spoiled if you know it. Even if you have, though, there are certain to be twists that are unique to the fic, including a startling revelation about a certain canon character with a mysterious past.

One thing that set this story apart for me was the fact that the case poses a true challenge to Sherlock, both intellectually and emotionally. There is a very real possibility throughout that everything could go horribly wrong. And even though Sherlock thinks he has an ace up his sleeve, there's one more surprise in store. It's creepy, it's sexy, it's twisted, and it's compelling.

Author's summary: Joan tries to date, and Sherlock gets in the way.

Reccer's comments: I admit I haven’t read that many Elementary fics – it may be due to the fact that when it comes to this fandom I prefer stories in which Sherlock and Joan are friends rather than a romantic pairing – but the characterization is absolutely spot on in this one; in fact, the interactions between Joan and Sherlock don’t feel all that different from what we saw in the first series of the show.
While Sherlock is a bit possessive and clingy at first he still tries not to overstep Joan’s boundaries when she tells him not to and it’s obvious how much he cares about her and their friendship, which I can’t help but find endearing.

A delightful read with hints of humor that might interest even readers who prefer gen.

Excerpt:

“Wow,” Marty murmurs, coming to stand beside [Joan] and then quickly averting his eyes, “a little awkward.”

“Good evening, Watson, Martin,” Sherlock greets cheerily. “Don’t worry, I assure you this isn’t
the slightest bit sexual. Your arrival is actually quite fortuitous. I’m testing how inconspicuously I
can escape a pair of handcuffs when I am experiencing mild physical discomfort. You can tell me
how obvious my escape attempts are—and perhaps take a few notes as well,” he adds to Joan,
“for when you’re ready to move on to intermediate escape attempts.”

“You can get out of handcuffs?” Marty asks her.

“On the first try,” answers Sherlock, beaming with no small amount of pride. “She’s a natural.”

Being a Tale of Glorious Adventures, Love Letters, Treachery, Longing, Secret Identities, Deathbed Confessions, First Kisses, Daring Escapes, and True Love.

Reccer's comments: So, one day I chanced upon this fic and downloaded it to my e-reader. Then I sat down and started reading and the world around me ceased to exist until I reached the end, which, unfortunately, came all too soon.
Sadly, I don’t occupy a minor position in the British government or else I would decree this fic to be entered into the curriculum of any aspiring Sherlock BBC fanfic reader. For take almost all the characters of the series, add a few pounds of Dickens, some pints of Wilkie Collins, a heavy dollop of the Bronte sisters, a tablespoon of Austen, and a pinch of ACD storylines, stir the whole concoction according to the instructions of Charles Palliser and Sarah Waters and you’ll end up with this great shaggy beast of a wonderfully precocious fic that combines massive scope with minute detail and serves it all up in a plot so thick the spoon stands up in it.
The story is set in the Victorian era and the period is both lovingly and convincingly drawn in beautiful, luxurious language reminiscent of the nineteenth century. We’re taken on a tour of Victorian society, from the hovels of the poor through the lush and unspoiled countryside around Sherrinford Hall, home of the Earl of Sherrinford and his children Mycroft and Sherlock, to the stables, where John, the new groom serves under the loving eye of Mr and Mrs Gregson, and on to the servant’s quarters to the grand chambers of the Hall itself.
Told from John’s POV Sherlock and he are but children when they first meet. John’s career as a jockey was nipped in the bud by an accident and he’s been sent by his former employer to Sherrinford Hall. There he strikes up a fast friendship with the youngest son of the Earl, the quick-witted and sharp-tempered Sherlock, against whose temperament he has been warned.
All seems well with the world while John and Sherlock enjoy their summer of friendship. But of course all good things must come to an end. The scene is laid for an elaboration of their friendship through correspondence until the next summer, the last before Sherlock will have to go to Eton.
At that moment the first angst starts to seep into the fic. Sherlock doesn’t write and John fears for their friendship, and worse, until Sherlock shows up unexpectedly one stormy night and John gets his first inkling the world outside even for an Earl’s son the world outside Sherrinford Hall might be a bit more fraught with peril than he had assumed.
Then the shocking developments start happening so fast and so relentlessly, their whole world torn asunder while they’re confronted with every atrocity mankind ever invented that the reader is left hanging in the ropes like an exhausted boxer, and yet thirsting for more. Truly, the phrase ‘unputdownable’ must have been coined with this fic in mind.
As we follow Sherlock and John on their journey we meet hundreds of characters. The characters from the series are of course designed to various positions in life in a totally different setting and yet they remain IC throughout, no mean feat. All of the OC’s, and we meet lots and lots of those, are well-rounded and lovingly drawn. As this is a Victorian novel there is a lot of sickness and death and outrageous treatment of innocents and the reader becomes invested in what happens to the OC’s almost as much as what happens to John and Sherlock and Mycroft and Irene and Mike Stamford and Molly and Angelo and… need I go on?
Honestly, I could go on and on and on about this fic, but in the end, to quote a certain consulting criminal, “I would try to convince you but… everything I have to say has already crossed your mind!”
For I do hope to have convinced you to go and read this right now. You truly won’t regret it that you did.

Title: Synonymous Angels
Author: Aderyn
Pairing: Gen or Sherlock/John (author lists as both)
Length: 2,119
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: He’s on the side of the angels…and they’re on his.

Reccer's comments: Aderyn long has been one of my favorite authors in the fandom. Her spare style leans heavily towards prose poetry; striking imagery and blurring the lines between dreams and reality, the natural and supernatural, frequently charge her work with tension even when the surface appears placid. For example, in this work, no overtly dramatic event takes place, no actual reunion between Sherlock and John, or revelation that Sherlock lives. Still, the passing of time brings tension, as Sherlock's return draws closer.

Aderyn excels at the depiction of mourning, John's main activity in this work, usually pairing it with healing, or at least hope. Winter (grief) followed by the promise of resurrection of growing things in spring is evoked near the end by the OFC Eleri in a graveyard conversation with John that he later echoes in a question for the stone angel, suggesting that Sherlock will return as tangibly as the plants now lying beneath the ground:

Communication is the other primary activity in this one-shot: directly between Mycroft and Sherlock (but we only hear Mycroft's words), John with the gravestones (including the angel), John with Sherlock (but only in John's dream), Molly and Eleri with John. Plenty of nonverbal communication occurs too, primarily through the gifting of flowers and the calls of the birds. Nor does the mourning angel statue in the cemetery speak to John directly, but John does speak to her and one has a sense of a healing presence, embodied by two human women: Molly and Eleri, one of the Homeless Network (or is she one of Mycroft's? that happily is left ambiguous, for the reader to decide). These women, the synonymous angels, are John's quiet guardians, helping him with the work of grieving without abandoning their own work.

Title: Sketchy
Author: serpentynka
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 186,281
Rating: E
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Sherlock takes on an obvious case (barely a 4) and is forced to re-examine what it means to see and observe.

Reccer's comments: Serpentynka is new to fanfiction, but I was blown away by their magnum opus, Sketchy. Blown away as in they have written what will doubtless be on my list of best Sherlock fics of 2014. I was first drawn in by the masterful Sherlock POV, then charmed by the main OC, Alex Nussbaum, an artist who reluctantly agrees to tutor Sherlock in drawing (some of Sherlock's art is scattered about the text). Initial distrust eventually grows into a warm, honest friendship:

Long non-spoilery excerpt... )

The rich depiction of places (primarily Norfolk, London, and Vienna) and an organic sense of structure brings additional depth to the world of this story. What kept me enthralled, however, what made me feel 100,000+ words were not enough, was the slowly evolving relationship of Sherlock and John, underlined by rapid POV switches and a dynamic approach to combining narrative, dialogue, and interior thoughts:

Another non-spoilery excerpt... )

The reader is treated not to just the movement from friends to lovers, but a detailed evolution of their romantic and sexual relationship in the months that follow the admissions of love and attraction. We experience the external and internal obstacles that challenge Sherlock and John, realizing before the end how much that relationship has deepened, despite their own considerable flaws and Mycroft's well-meant but heavy-handed "tests".

Add to all this erotic storytelling, initiated by John and later attempted by Sherlock. John's steamy fantasies are realistic enough to be re-imagined in the "real world" (as some are!), whereas Sherlock's are more overtly biographical and can be hot or intensely moving (sometimes both).

One of John's stories... )

If you love reading about the visual arts and the skill of craftspeople, this is a work for you. If you adore sophisticated, sensual fiction that repays multiple readings, if you enjoy memorable OCs, and treasure IC romance between two flawed characters who struggle (and sometimes fail) to communicate, this is the work for you.

Title: In Silence We Take Flight
Author: Aiisling
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 13,627
Rating: Teen
Warnings: Major Character Death (canonical)
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Sherlock jumps, and from the moment his body hits the pavement, John Watson does not say a word. There is a way to bring Sherlock back from the dead, if John is strong enough-and Moriarty doesn't beat him to it.

A Sherlock fusion fic with Hans Christian Andersen's "Wild Swans."

Reccer's comments: A fairy tale AU for a series set in 21st-century London? Yes! References in Sherlock to the stories collected by the Brothers Grimm and the epic quality of the characters have inspired several authors to set Sherlock in the dark, compelling world of fairy tales. Aiisling has produced a superb example, with a haunting, bittersweet atmosphere, varied pacing, and memorable characters.

John is the primary focus. Unspeaking, grief-stricken, and brave, he is determined to sacrifice what he must to bring Sherlock back to life:
Excerpt One... )

Mrs. Hudson is also beautifully wrought; she has sharp edges and a strength that makes her more than a one-dimensional motherly figure:
Excerpt Two... )

As in many a fairy story, what is desired is only won at great personal cost. Nothing will be the same, even if the enchantment is broken. But that does not mean Aiisling's work features unrelieved misery. There is always light in the darkness; a small, fragile candle kept lit by many hands.
