Title:Can't Rewind Now We've Gone Too Far
Author: Basser
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/OMC
Length:111887 words
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Rape/non-con, drug abuse, implied child abuse
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: At age nineteen, Sherlock Holmes dropped out of university to become a drug addict.

Reccer's comments: There are a lot of fics out there where Sherlock does drugs and ends up on the streets, but this is one of the few that I felt really convincingly dealt with the psychology behind Sherlock's actions in a way that was in character, realistic and detailed. Basser's take on Sherlock is unusual in fandom, potraying him as suffering from a form of ADHD, which is not a diagnosis I'd have thought of for Sherlock but a very convincing case is made for it and how it affects him and his ability to relate to others.

I love the author's take on Sherlock and Mycroft's relationship and how their behaviour each fuels each other's insecurities, Mycroft's spying aggravating Sherlock's paranoia and anxiety, Sherlock's rebellion and drug abuse a source of terror for Mycroft.

Basser also creates an original love interest for Sherlock, Eric Crenshaw, who is one of the more endearing OCs I've encountered - he is a total contrast with Sherlock, from a very poor background, sweet natured and streetwise. It's very interesting to see Sherlock interact with such a different character, and their loving but doomed relationship is handled very well.

If you like stories that delve deep into character's psychologies in new and fascinating ways this could be one for you!

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary:For a man who’s scared of heights, Lestrade has taken to spending an awful lot of time up on rooftops.

Reccer's comments: Lestrade accompanying Sherlock on various rooftop jaunts... this story skillfully incorporates the never-shot scene of Sherlock and Lestrade on the roof as well as giving an insight into Sherlock and Lestrade's relationship over the years, Lestrade as a steady, supportive but often ignored presence as Sherlock takes his tumultuous journey from troubled young drug addict, to successful detective, to someone who finally has the maturity to rebuild his life and his friendships post-Reichenbach. It's a sweet gentle romance, and a deft character study of both men.

Rating: R
Warnings: Rape/Non-con, sexual violence inflicted on a child, violence, suicide
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary:John Watson has been saving Sherlock's life for a very long time, even if he doesn't know it.

Reccer's comments: This is one of the earliest fics I read in fandom, and it's one I come back to - its a elegantly structured love story, using a similar conceit to the Time Traveller's Wife: John appears at Sherlock's side throughout his life whenever Sherlock is in severe distress but neither of them know why. The writer beautifully evokes the strength of feeling between John and Sherlock, John's distress at being unable to help young!Sherlock tackle bullies and family tragedy and Sherlock's frustration at never being able to hold on to John. The conclusion and resulting explanation for John's time travel is very neatly done in my opinion.

There are some dark themes touched on in this fic, so please read the warnings but it's overall a heartwarming and very touching read.

Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: approx. 49,200 words
Rating: mature
Warnings:none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Sherlock leant forward, his long fingers curving round to grip John’s.
“I won’t let him win,” he said, eyes hard. “I will do whatever it takes to get you out.”

Reccer's comments: This story is a very clever twist on TRF, every bit as fast-paced and thrilling as that glorious episode. After a gruelling intro it all begins innocently enough with Sherlock whisking off to Las Vegas where Mrs Hudson has been arrested for murder. It’s the first loose brick and in no time at all the whole life Sherlock has so carefully built for himself comes crashing down around him, with Lestrade suspended, John dead and Mycroft as usual being no help at all.

I really can’t tell you any more for that would reveal too much of the incredibly crafty and clever plot. This fic is part casefic, part thriller and part psychological character study, brimming with angst and emotions and agonising choices and decisions. It will have you biting your nails and desperately reading on even though there are probably a thousand other things you should be doing. Should be, yes… but reading this is so much more rewarding.

Author's summary: When you're the writer, you're in bloody charge for once. Aren't you?

Reccer's comments: This has haunted me ever since I read it over a year ago.  It's such a nakedly realistic depiction of grief that reading it hurt, and I mean that as a compliment.  The structure is brilliant: the way what happened is revealed a bit more in each iteration, the way that John uses words to reshape his reality, his edge of hysteria as he does it, the ambiguity about which things really happened, and the interspersed quotes about writing--they all combine to make this something indelible and deeply moving. This is basically the Atonement of Sherlock fics.

Author's summary: "Moriarty said you was obsessed with puzzles," Moran had said, his eyes shining. "But he's the greatest puzzle you'll ever come across." And through the rage and growing tendrils of doubt, a distant part of Sherlock had laughed. No puzzle could be more challenging or complex than the one these people had taken from him.

Reccer's comments: In which beanarie is a deductive genius and writes several key aspects of the season one finale months before it aired. The result is now jossed but it's a fascinating alternate finale that sheds light on Sherlock as addict, Irene as both exactly and not at all what she seemed, and Watson as heroine. In the end, Sherlock is saved because of his history and connection with Watson. Their shared past makes understanding possible at a crucial moment, and her caring and anger about what happened carry him through the aftermath until he can pick up the investigative thread himself again. Excellent characterization across the board (including Alfredo and Teddy), with evocative detail in Sherlock's experience of altered mental states and in Watson's effort to help him back to recovery.

Author's summary: "A wondrous subtle thing is love, for here were we two, who had never seen each other until that day, between whom no word or even look of affection had ever passed, and yet now in an hour of trouble our hands instinctively sought for each other."
-- The Sign of Four, Arthur Conan Doyle
Joan Watson meets someone new. Sherlock "helps".
Reccer's comments: A selection of mini-raspberry-cheesecake-sized delights that simultaneously depict a solid if early bond between Joan and Sherlock and the growing connection between Joan and Mary. One of my favorite bits is a nod to canon with Sherlock's habit of inventing different occupations to introduce Joan, in this case "biographer." Set in mid-season one, before "Details." The third chapter also explores an alternate backstory for Joan, with a teaspoon of emotional hurt/comfort. Written for the 2013 Purimgifts exchange.

Length: 62k words
Rating: Adult
Warnings: dubious consent, violence, talk of self-harm
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Sherlock began to turn into a desert when he was nine. Desertification took years, but grain by grain his Memory Palace turned from a primordial forest into scrub brush and sand. Only mad dogs and Englishmen could love the desert that he'd made of himself.

When John was fourteen, he stayed out late one particularly nasty March night at the rec centre reading a book. The results of that choice left him feeling like an ill fitting cog the rest of his life.

Or equal opposites in balance.

Reccer's comments: This is a challenging omegaverse story. It took me three tries to finish reading the first scene, both because of the parenthetical and mildly archaic language and because Sherlock, as a boy, not only witnesses but participates in the murder of someone he loves.

Most authors tend to 'normalize' Sherlock Holmes, to show him as a man that, underneath, isn't so different. Fresne does the opposite.

Sherlock's parents are genius grifters, forgers and criminals. In his family, "Omegas bear the children, alphas bury the bodies." In fact, Sherlock isn't his name, just one in a string of aliases that Sherlock and Mycroft made a pact to take as their own. As an adult, Sherlock has no home, but dozens of bolt holes around London. He's an urban legend in the city. If you have a very interesting problem, and sit in the right cafe and tell strangers about it, 'The Consulting Omega' just might solve the case for you. Oh, and Sherlock also has the worst possible taste in men. The alphas he's chemically and biologically attracted to are, without exception, thieves, murderers, and psychopaths.

John, in case you were wondering, also has a rather tragic tale here, albeit one much closer to canon.

For the first half of the story, their only connection is a medieval story called 'The Romance of Mystery'. The entire story has the feel of a tale from that era, with broad strokes between detailed adventures and gilt-edged horrors recited in a matter-of-fact tone.

The author is obviously very familiar with both BBC and ACD canon, and gleefully twists snips of both to her own devices. (ACD's murderous ape is used to great effect for one of their cases.) Of course this is a story about John's romance of his Mystery, and once the two of them meet, the story becomes an intense, messed-up, and vaguely criminal love story.

Reading it was a unique experience, and one I highly recommend!

Title: A Study in Midnight

Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 41,500 words
Rating: M
Warnings: none
Verse: ACD books, also a crossover with Neil Gaiman's "A Study in Emerald," which is itself playing within the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
Author's summary: In a world dominated by an alien monarchy, criminals Sherlock Holmes and John Watson work to take down the royal establishment while detective James Moriarty and his associate Sebastian Moran try to track them down. Also featuring Irene Adler, and Roderick Maclean, who did in fact exist. AU based on Neil Gaiman's phenomenal short story "A Study in Emerald."

Reccer's comments: I have never read Lovecraft or Gaiman, but this nightmarish dystopia drew me in immediately and the story, though darker and more violent than my usual fic tastes, kept me constantly absorbed, intrigued, and excited, and occasionally it completely pulled the rug from under me. It was darkly operatic in the best sense, theatrical and unashamedly Victorian but grounded in truly complex characterizations with delightful touches of dry wit. Throughout this story, we slowly learn that no one is quite what they seem.

It has one of the best Watson narrative voices I have ever encountered; the story at times switches to other POV characters in clearly marked sections, but the majority of the story is Watson's. He and Holmes are more broken, more desperate, more afraid and more bloody than I am used to seeing them, but they live in a horror show of a world, and despite it all they are deeply recognizable: Holmes fights for justice, and Watson fights for Holmes.

The story is beautifully written and paced, and the main secondary characters -- Irene and Moran -- are particularly interesting. A truly engrossing read.

Reccer's comments:
Most of the fics I’ve recced thus far this month have been fluffy and domestic. This is absolutely not. This is a Sherlock-is-relapsing fic, and it is absolutely gorgeous, twisting and thorny and razor-sharp.

This is a literate and literary fic, referencing Milton and switching effortlessly between second first* and third person while never leaving Joan’s point of view, and when I first read it it reduced me to cursing inarticulateness. It is carefully measured and so much more heartbreaking as a result. It’s the sort of fic that inspires me to work on my own writing, in the hopes that someday I might move someone else as I have been moved.

Author's summary: The Third Step is just about making the decision. Just that, and nothing more. So why is Alfredo having such a hard time getting Sherlock to do it?

Reccer's comments:
I’ll start with the caveat that I know very little about 12-step programs like Narcotics Anonymous, as I have neither first-hand nor second-hand experience with them. That said, this fic, which is all about Alfredo’s work as Sherlock’s sponsor, rings incredibly true to me. Sherlock is balking at the step where he has to submit to a higher power, and the way Alfredo works his way to the core of Sherlock’s objection and finds a way to coax him through it is just beautiful. The bits of Alfredo’s back story that are cut in really flesh out a character we haven’t seen nearly enough of on the show, and the way goddessdster shows Alfredo maintaining his cool with Sherlock, then opening up a little to Joan, and finally really leaning on his own sponsor is deeply compelling.

Author's summary: Marcus gets along really well with Holmes' friends.

Reccer's comments:
Some of Elementary’s supporting characters get a chance to shine in this fic. Marcus meets and begins crushing on both Alfredo and Ms. Hudson, and Sherlock is a little appalled.

"I find it disturbing that you are forging relationships with my inner circle for reasons unknown," said Holmes. "You have ulterior motives."

Marcus took a second to parse that out, and then another second to figure out what to say. "Yeah, I guess," he admitted, finally. "My ulterior motive is that your friends are hot, Holmes."

Every character’s voice is spot-on, particularly Marcus’s as the viewpoint character, and the fic overall is just so delightfully fluffy, capturing perfectly the heady feeling of a burgeoning relationship. There are also some lovely moments between Sherlock and Joan, bickering and being domestic, and it’s wonderful to see Joan and Alfredo especially continuing to help Sherlock manage his sobriety.

I don't generally listen to podfics, but susan_voight's reading is very clear and smooth, and it has a sort of sly humor that really suits Marcus's flirting.

All in all, however, you consume this fic, the experience is a delight.

Title: Silver Blaze
Author: LittlePippin76
Pairing: John/Mary
Length: 35,000 words
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Based on the ACD story Silver Blaze, but with the BBC characters, and my own spin. Sherlock is called away to investigate a double murder and a missing race horse, while John's marriage is foundering under the weight of real life. Ten chapters, some hurt and comfort, some angst, some humour, some friendship.

Reccer's comments: LittlePippin is a prolific writer who, amongst other things, devoted herself to updating the original ACD stories and introducing characters like Mary Morstan into the modern world of BBC Sherlock. This story was posted a long time before Season 3 and any talk of having Amanda Abbington on the show and finds a solution all on its own of how John can be married and have a child and still solve cases with Sherlock - a solution that feels real and believable.

There are no grand betrayals, secret villains, tear-jerking character deaths or anything similarly sensational and sentimental, just two ordinary people with their ordinary marriage problems. Plus a small baby in the flat that's keeping them up all night. I really admire LittlePippin's firm grasp of these little domestic quarrels that slowly build up into a bigger fight - all because these two people who basically like and love each other are too tired and annoyed to tread carefully and constantly manage to say the wrong thing.

In ordner to take a step back from his marriage troubles, John joins Sherlock on a case, but not even the great Sherlock Holmes manages to concentrate on the case 24/7 when he has an upset John by his side. Especially since said upset John finds himself in a situation that's usually reserved for Sherlock - meaning that Sherlock has to try and be the John to his John. It's incredibly touching to see how hard Sherlock tries to be a good friend to John. It's clear that he's not happy with the fact that John moved out and started a family and that he'd prefer it if things were back to how they used to be, and yet he still tries to help John save his marriage and gives him some genuinely good advice. Mostly, though, he can't help but be Sherlock Holmes, so while he means well, he often gets things wrong in a way that's hilarious, exasperating and heartbreaking, all at the same time. But John sees that Sherlock's trying and that's enough for him. And for me too.

This is in many ways a charming, warm-hearted and moving story with an interesting case happening (and being solved) along the way, but most of all it's a celebration of Sherlock and John's boundless friendship and for that I love reading it again and again.

Author's summary: None provided for the series. Summary for part 1: John is an omega who has been on heat suppressants his entire life. When Sherlock realises this and shows an interest in John, they have to work their way through the problems caused by John having never had a real heat in his life.

Reccer's comments: Another series that sucked me in from this incredibly versatile and prolific author. What starts out as a fairly standard omegaverse first-time fic develops into an emotionally much deeper series chronicling John and Sherlock's life together as a couple and parents of not just one, but eventually four children. It covers the start of their relationship, Reichenbach and the repercussions, life as parents of a disparate brood, and extends into their children's teen and young adult years, and beyond (see: character death warning).

What really made this series special for me is that it doesn't limit itself to the titillation of Alpha/Omega dynamics, but tackles real relationship and family issues. This isn't an idealization of Sherlock and John as offbeat but ultimately model parents, with large-eyed, curly-haired genius children. It feels very real, and Sherlock and John feel like real people. Yes, they are to a certain extent defined by their AU biology, but the author never loses sight of the core characters, and the basic traits that make the very special John-Sherlock connection resonate with such strength in any incarnation only seem to be strengthened.

Author's summary: None given for the series. Summary of the first part, The Ninth Muse: Conspiracy and murder find Sherlock Holmes and John Watson surrounded by covert enemies in the heart of Scotland Yard. Together, they unearth clues that illuminate the scope, depth, and distorted psychology behind the crime. And, after a pre-emptive strike ordered by the mastermind they pursue, Holmes elects to continue the investigation under conditions that will force John Watson to fight for his friend's -- colleague's -- life.

Reccer's comments: This series is the ultimate in BBC Sherlock gen casefic. It probably comes closer to the format and spirit of the series as aired than anything else I've read, and beyond that, it is simply excellent story-telling. Each case is meticulously planned and expertly executed, with nonstop, pounding action and labyrinthine investigations leading inexorably toward the climax. There is tons of hurt, especially physical injuries, and not much comfort as Sherlock proves again and again that his body is only transport.

The thing that really clinched the series for me, though, is the development of Sherlock's character as he learns to interact with and relate to other people. He never loses his single-mindedness of focus and purpose that often comes across as rude and degrading toward others, but he has moments of connection in each installment that challenge him in new ways. Whether it's his female American counterpart; a potential love interest; Sarah Sawyer (as a platonic ally), who refuses to be put off by the danger surrounding him; and through it all, John. Both he and Sherlock struggle with what place John occupies in Sherlock's life, be it as doctor, protector, sounding board, moral compass, gopher, or, quite possibly, friend.

None of the stories in this series has more than a couple of dozen comments or kudos, and far fewer bookmarks. I am not sure why people are not more enthusiastic about these stories, unless it's the Gen aspect and the length. I know 200,000 words is a big commitment, and you should read them all in order, as each story builds in some way on the one before in terms of the relationships, but the cases are episodic and pretty much self-contained. But like I said at the beginning, if this isn't the absolute go-to gen casefic series in the fandom yet, it definitely should be.

And as an extra bonus, the author has also created some fantastic artwork to go along with the series.

Reccer's comments: The summary sounds a bit cracky, but the fic is not at all. It's actually a beautiful character study of both Sherlock and John and their relationship. I envy the writer's ability to write with such beautiful language and imagery.

It starts out on a light-hearted note, with witty repartee between Sherlock and John that had me smiling more than once. It then moves into more serious territory as the reasons why John has so many tattoos and yet hides them away from everyone, including Sherlock, come to light. Sherlock is desperate to get John to trust him enough to reveal all his tattoos and explain the meanings behind each one.

Throughout all this, Sherlock struggles with how he really feels about John. To help him come to the right conclusion, Mycroft and Irene both do what they can to help him along the way.

It's hard to find readable Elementary fic. This, I think, is convincing for this version of Holmes, who is more self-destructive, drained, emotional, and bleak than most incarnations.
This is a sketch of Holmes torturing himself through want, supposedly for a woman, a chimerical figure whom he admits, even in the depths of his craving, is a side effect rather than a cause. She's more convincing as metaphor than fact.

It's well written. It's the first I've read where I can picture the character saying and doing what's described. It's a cutting representation of addiction and pain and irrational gut-level need. It's a good bit of backstory for Holmes and another sliver of reinterpretation for The Woman.

Reccer's comments: After my last rec centering on John's inner world, I thought it appropriate that I round out the month with a little navel-gazing on Sherlock's part as well. This is an absolutely fascinating look at Sherlock's past, pre-season one of the BBC series. Although it is nominally the prequel second part of an AU fic series (the first part being Pax Americana), you do not need to have read the first part, and in fact In Confidence can easily be read as a prequel to the television series itself.

The fic consists entirely of case notes, session notes and transcripts, emails, and letters from Sherlock's first stint in a rehab clinic, at age 25. Here is what a bit of it looks like (in this excerpt, CR is Carola Rivas, Sherlock's therapist):

CR:      Do you want it to shock me?
SH:      If you found this shocking, then I would seriously doubt your level of experience. Humans are cruel. Surely you know this by now.
CR:      So you are testing me, then? Trying to see what shocks me?
SH:      I test everyone I know. Only way to know who’s safe and who’s not.
CR:      I might be dangerous, then?
SH:      You might be. I have to wonder what kind of people are attracted to psychology, in the first place.

The fact that the author is herself in training as a clinical psychologist means that everything is set out with a high degree of technical detail and professional insight, from the terminology to the therapeutic structure and Sherlock's progress while an in-patient. I liked that the author didn't dumb things down or insert extensive notes to try and explain things to her lay readership, although she has a series of essays on psychological issues raised by the BBC series on her tumblr (http://emmadelosnardos.tumblr.com/critanalysis), and is enthusiastic about engaging in discussion on the topic. Having said that, I don't want to give anyone the impression that this is a dry, technical slogfest. It is one of the most engaging fics I have read in this fandom, despite the lack of an action-based plot.

This fic centers solely on Sherlock, although there is a strong supporting cast in the persons of Mycroft, Lestrade, and several excellent OCs, including a cousin, Georgina, and the staff at the treatment center, including in particular Sherlock's primary psychologist, Dr. Carola Rivas. We also get some glimpses of Sherlock's parents, maternal grandmother, and Victor Trevor, although only through the filter of Sherlock's memories. Even with such minimal and biased information, the characters are vivid and large, and it is the skill of the author that we are able to fill in for ourselves many of the omissions which Sherlock makes, allowing us to receive a fuller picture of Sherlock's home life and psyche.

The conversations between Sherlock and Rivas are rich and rife with mind games, attempts at oneupmanship, and playful banter. Sherlock's backstory and biography, as they are revealed, are riveting, tragic, and poignant in parts. There are also humorous moments, like the emails between Lestrade and his superior, Commander Gibbons. In the end, we all know how things turned out, but it is the journey to that point that is the interesting part.

Author's summary: Sherlock Holmes takes down Moriarty’s syndicate. He also takes John Watson with him. AU of The Reichenbach Fall.

Reccer's comments: If you're up for a stark, gritty, unapologetic, pull-no-punches road trip, this is one of the best offerings post Series 2. As the summary says, it is an AU of Episode 3, beginning with the 'we're going to need to coordinate' scene. From there, rather than meeting Moriarty on the roof of St Bart's, Sherlock and John go on the run together under the aliases of Benedict and Martin ;). Their journey takes them from the sweaty, seamy underworld of drug dealers in Pennsylvania to the middle of a turf war among drug smugglers in the American Southwest to the high-tech world of computer espionage in Shanghai.

The main plot was clearly planned with great care and peppered with realistic details that set the scenes perfectly. I felt like I was right there with the characters every step of the way. There are interesting original supporting characters, and even a cameo by Irene. When the climax comes, it is a true stroke of genius worthy of the world's greatest detective. However, take note that there are unabashed depictions of drug use, torture, and murder which some readers may find disturbing.

A secondary but no less gripping subplot is the developing relationship between Sherlock and John. When they set out, their relationship is as depicted in the series: close friends, but nothing more. As their odyssey plays out and Sherlock is drawn further down into the grip of his inner demons, things become clear to both of them that lead them to admit their deeper feelings for each other.

Excerpt:
John hates it—hates himself—and he hates the way his voice breaks when he asks, “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” Sherlock says, so quietly that John barely hears it, “Go back to bed. I’ll be back in a second.”

John wants to say no. John wants to wrap his arms around Sherlock’s waist, wants to put his face into the space between Sherlock’s shoulder blades, wants to take away every bad memory that Sherlock’s ever had. He wants to press himself into Sherlock until they bleed together, until Sherlock has conclusive evidence of how much he fills the empty spaces inside John.

Love is not a strong enough word.

“Okay,” John says and it hurts him more than anything but he turns around and slips back under the covers because it’s what Sherlock needs.

No one comes out unscathed, but the ending is emotionally fulfilling and forward-looking. Another page-turner that you'll want to clear the evening for.
