The two face it together as long as they can with plausible denial, seasoned by reminiscences of adventures-past, and eventual acceptance. No one dies in the fic, but it's not far off and they know it. They take the opportunity to be grateful for their decades together. The author tagged it as Holmes/Watson but it's easily read as platonic OTP if you prefer.
